It has come to my attention that myself, as well as many others of the rennlist community are having issues with their speedometers. We are not whining about our speedo's being inaccurate at certain speeds, we are whining about our speedometers not engaging until we are traveling at about 40mph. As stated in an earlier post, cleaning ground contacts does not rid us of speedo gremlin. So once and for all, can someone please explain why we going 0mph at 30mph!

I had this problem in my 86 turbo. Seemed like a sticky needle to me, my car had just come out of storage and it seemed to happen less often when the car was a DD, and also much less often when it was warmer out. I never fixed it, just disclosed it whenI sold the car. Tapping it also worked to free the needle.
I would suppose pulling the speedo and careful cleaning/lubing perhaps adjusting where the needle stops might fix it. I did not want to mess with mine because my car had relatively low mileage and I did not want to risk making the speedo look swapped.

IMO it seems that it just isn't getting told what to do. although if you press the trip reset button it will pop up to the correct speed you are traveling at (i know its a bad idea to do that, but p/o said that thats what to do if you needed to know) also if anyone is confused this only happens on Late model (dashed) 944's

Mine has problems in winter. It wont move after sitting all night, when it's been very cold, until the car has warmed up a bit. It starts edging up on my way to work but that's only a 5-10 minute drive.

This is definetly caused by grease in the speedo head. This is also a prob. in
Subaru and a lot of other import cars. It is not hard to fix ( after the speedo is removed), just clean and relube with something less sticky.

You know how the manual starts with; disconnect the battery ground. Well i didn't this one time and after I got the thing rolling I found the speedo and the tach was way, way off. i offered a short prayer to Dr.Porsche and disconnected the Batt and recommenced and all was well. The problem is electrical or mechanical. If mechanical take the assemble out of the dash and whack it a few times. I'm quite serious.
