i got a 1988 924S and i bought it a week ago. something is bouncing around and i was told it was the plastic part of the flex plate in the bell housing that is slowly breaking off. i probably need a new one, how much would that go for? i was quoted at $1200-1400, is that too much? and they said all day (11 hours) to fix it. any other solutions?
thanks for the help, i'm a newbie here and seems like a great site

That is a very good price considering the rubber damper costs about $400 to $800 depending on where you get it. Its more labor than changing a clutch so the price is pretty darn good. Make sure you take it to a shop that knows how to fix a 924S though.

Yep. Had it done a few years back. I bought the part (vertex) for under 700$, and had a wrench install it. 11 hours seems right-
Lego is dead on- make sure your mechanic has worked on a 924/944 bellhousing/ torque tube before.

IIRC the manual calls this between 11 and 15 hours of labor. The 944 Automatic and the 924S auto are identical- so dont be TOO specific with your mechanic.
1600 including parts is about right, I dropped $2100 a few years back on the same repair. (and I bought the parts for the bag of dirt mechanic who took 4 weeks to fix it.

I was going to recommend the AT cooler lines, they are 78$ and 110$ respectively.
You can source these parts out independently of your mechanic and save yourself the markup. (Maybe - depends on the wrench.. )

Sounds like a good place to get it done; if they overestimate, they're honest in my book, then they're not trying to get you in cheap and then sock you with the real cost.
I just did this earlier this summer on my 924S. It is a long process, no question about it. I got lucky on a new in box damper off of eBay.

i hate seeing ppl spending so much money on a mechanic that usually just ends up screwing something up anyway. not saying the job you need doen is easy. its actual;ly quite hard. but the tranny lines you can do yourself no problem.
