Default 924S vs 944

I though that I had decided to get a 944, but that was befor I started looking at the 924S. Now I'll kick the hornet's nest and ask which one is the better of the two. I want a simple car that fun to drive and easy to work on and get parts for.

ok i own both. btw what part of missouri? anyways i love the curves on the 944, nothing can beat it, but my 924S is faster in acceleration and top speed too. insurance on the 924S is way cheaper, and it's price will be lower as well in comparison to an equivalent 944 because it is a 924 body. not too many people interested in it. if you are close by you can come and check mine out for yourself, and the 944 is for sale if your interested.

also a late style 944 interior is much more desireable, i dunno there are many factors, but basically they are the same car when u get down to it.

Also I believe the suspension on the 924S is the older stamped steel type rather than the newer aluminum type found on the 85 1/2 and later 944 models. I also heard that the top speed of the 924S is a little higher than the 944 due to a better drag coefficient because of the slimmer design without the wider rear fenders of the 944.

in my opinion late 944 is a better car, there are losts of improvements. Interior is much nicer, feels roomier etc. Fender flares make the car look much nicer again my opinion. Also the 944 takes wider tires so better handling.

Until 1987 the 944 had a bit more power than the 924S, in '87 the 924S went up from 150 to 160bhp and the 944 went down from 163 to 160bhp. (Emition controlled 944's were also at 150bhp previously).

In 85.5 the beetle cabrio's rear suspension and the fabricated front wishbones were changed to cast aluminium Porsche parts on all 4 cylinder cars.

The 924 has less wind resistance and is weigh a bit less. I owned two 924's and they are very nice cars terribly underpowered though. The 924S should be totaly different. My biggest problem with the 924 is the ventilation and aircon. The flow of air is terrible, I've never driven the older 944's but the 85.5 cars are totaly different and have a decent air flow and aircon.

JohanvdWalt - in 1988 the 924S went from 150-160 because the 924S shares the same engine as the 944, and in 88 porsche bumped up the compression ratio in the 944, thus also in the 924S

The 924S came out in Sept '85, it shared the same 2,5l engine but in the 924S it was initially detuned to 150bhp to give the 944 buyers better value. In Sept '87 power was increased to 160bhp while the 944's was decreased to the same level so that Porsche could offer cars with the same power output worldwide.

The 924S has aluminum A-arms in the rear, steel in the front.

That's just your opinion, I (and many-many people) think that early interior looks more sporty and more classic Porsche-like.
Newer style is nice, but it's just what every other car has of that era.

If the U.S 944 only has 143 hp , I think that's what the 85.5 944 has according to my owners manual then what would the detuned 924S have or did they have more hp?
