Drove a 951 for the first time today..
So, I drove a stock 1986 944 Turbo today and I have to admit the turbo is a completely different beast than a NA. There is a nice rush of power (turbo lag is a little annoying) at every gear, much better then my NA.
The 951 was one of the best I've seen yet; fuchs, perfect guards red exterior, perfect white/black interior, and a nice stereo. I'm really considering buying it but I need to sell my 944 or the sets of Techarts I will be recieving before I do.
I have a few questions though...
- What is stock ground clearance (car was pretty low)?
- What is the option code "A11" (or something close) stand for?
- How is the clutch supposed to feel (clutch felt reasonably stiff)?
- How are the brakes supposed to feel (they engage hard after about 60% depressedt)?
Thanks. The car was fast, but I was dissapointed. The car wasn't scary fast.

Agreed. A stock 951 is a "wow, fun!" kind of car. A well-modded one with MAP/MAF, chips, larger turbo, larger exhaust and well-tuned is faster than a Z06 Corvette from about 30-140 mph. I can vouch for this first-hand. They're scary fast.

The car was stock as you may have guessed.
Another thing I didn't like about the car was that under hard acceleration the rear end drops a lot. I'm fairly sure that is a common thing, but are there any suspension upgrades to get rid of the roll (maybe stiffer springs)?

I find it funny that everyone complains about the lag of the 951's and the S's even more so. After coming from a 911 turbo I find there to be no lag to speak of. I actually feel the 951S's I drove to be very similar to the 944 S2. Although the S2 has a little more power at the bottom end and a little less up top.

I agree with cobalt on the lag issue. Even when off boost my stock 951 feels like it has more power than an 8 valve. An 8 valve can't even break the tires loose from a roll in first gear; my turbo with fuchs was doing it in second on colder days.
I think virgins jump in a turbo car and feel the acceleration blast and then instinctively want it instantly from that point on. Once you've gotten used to driving a turbo car, particularly daily, you just adjust your driving technique to accommodate for the lag.

The z06 has more power, ~same weight, and much better aero.
Having little power below a certain RPM is not turbo lag. That is simply a less than ideal power band, which is inherent on all turbocharged cars tuned for high horsepower. Turbolag is the time it takes for the car to produce maximum power at that particular engine speed once you go WOT.

I can definetly see how your wallet can start getting lighter with a 951 though. It's a fast car, but there is always an evil voice inside your head telling you to make it even faster.
