That might just work, now as soon as 20th st auto opens up at 7:30 this morning I can call and find out about a pan, but everywhere I find a gasket, its $45+, what ele comes in the gasket "set"? just the pan gasket, right?

Gasket set is the lower engine seal kit.

The gasket is going to be 45 alone most likely.

All you need to hold up the engine is a 4x4, an eye bolt bd a very short lenght of chain. I'll post a picture in a bit.

I definetly would. I did my bearings when I did my oil pan gasket. If you do the bearings, make sure you have new rod nuts to use.

Ok, So I went out and ordered m gasket, and picked up my pan locally this morning. I also am almost ready to slam the motor back in my VW, so I will have a car that I can drive while attempting to do the pan on the 944. I'll prolly start on the Porsche early Thursday morning, wich is my birthday btw, nice birthday present from mother nature huh?
So is anything else I should know about before diving into this one? I have studied the Clarks-Garage procedure over and over, I think I have it down for the most part, but I want to know if there is anything else that will be supporting my motor (besides a 2x4 and a chain) once I drop the cross-member? And where should I attatch the chain to on the motor, just the 2 eyelets?

i would do the bearings as a precautionary, and you know....you're already there........

plus, how much would it suck if you installed the pan, started her up, and found you'd developed a knock......

at least post pics once you're in there.

happy birthday on thursday!

mine is monday.

wooooo.

He'll need a torque wrench if he does the bearings.

I don't know if you have an Autozone in Tucson, but they have a tool loan program. They will loan you an engine hoist. They charge a healthy deposit but you get it all back when you return the hoist. If you don't have an Autozone you might try some of the other major auto parts stores and see if they have a similar program.

Wow, I didn't know Autozone rents hoists, I work for CSK, (Checker, Schucks, Kragens, and now Murrays) I don't think we have any of our stores in Flordia, but a hoist in the loaner program is actually a good idea, we should start doing that.
And thanks for the advice everyone, I'm pretty sure I didn't starve her for oil, the pressure dropped to about 3 bars by the time I shut it down and coasted up my driveway, and just before i turned the key off the idiot light came on. I'll take a closer look at the bearings when I pull it apart, but I probably will end up replacing them while I'm under there, that really would suck if I did all that work to develop a knock. I'll post some pics later tonight when I get back from BAP Imports with my new gasket.
My driveway is pretty long, and is also dirt, I'll try to get a good long distance shot of the oil trail up the drive. Don't know how I'll clean it up, and I hope the EPA doesn't see the mess, its bad.......
Oh, and in regards to the torque wrench, what is the reccomended torque spec. on the oil pan? I'd sure hate to crack the one I just dropped a load of cash on, and I'd hate to develop a big leak from not tightening it al the way.
Thanks again...

Only apply sealant to the valleys of the oil pan. The rest must be perfectly clean and free of any old gasket material and oil. It must be dry! I just did mine and didn't experience any of the gasket squeezing out like others have. And it doesn't leak. Knock on wood.

I did mine on an engine stand and it took awhile. You will need alot of patience under that car. And no, if you're using the chain and 2x4 method, nothing else is holding up the engine except the torque tube. To be safer, I wouldn't park my head or any part of my body directly beneath the engine. It is quite heavy (approx 340 lbs) and would do serious damage if it fell on you.

OK, heres a couple picks of the damage, plus a couple more.

The oil spill, note this is only my driveway, theres about a 1/4 mile stretch of this that goes all the way to the "main road" out of my "neighborhood"
Oh and thats a shot from my kitchen window, you may have to zoom in to see it bette ]link
And heres a crappy shot of the pan, I'll get better ones in a few days once I pull it off
