Well, I got the verdict today...
Here is what is wrong with the car. I can either have my mechanic tackle it, or I can try it myself, with no garage and no tools.
All belts and rollers
Waterpump
Headers
Power steering rack
just about every oil seal
headgasket
e-brake
brakes in general
and i want A/C and my moonroof to work.
Total price is going be JUST under 3 grand. I really would rather do this myself, because the parts are just over 1 grand. The guy doing this is a great mechanic, and has worked on these cars since the early 80's. I have done nothing more than a venturi delete, vacuum lines, and ball joints. I did watch a timing belt get done, but I was also busy putting alcohol in my system at teh time...
What should I do? If I do it myself, I will want to go further and take out the engine and get it all nice looking and add some goodies...but I don't have a garage....should I have him do it or should I do it?

3 grand seems cheap for that work... With all that, just pull the motor and rebuild it... better access to the headers, rack etc anway. You can reseal the ac easier as well. With the motor in, if you got the money, have the mech do it.

50 bucks an hour is his rate. The only thing not listed in that price is A/C....cause he didn't know the exact price on it....and moonroof, cause he didn't know what the problem was yet

for comparison, my tech, who's factory certified for all Porsches, and is the only one other than me I trust to touch my car, and he does 944's all the time, his rate is $115/hour
for $50/hr, do it. seriously

The thing is that for 3K you still don't have working A/C or moonroof. What else would the car need?
To bad that you didn't buy Joe's 944 with ice cold A/C and it needed nothing...

I wonder if the sale went through....
I've always said that if you going to own one of these 20 year old cars, you'd better be able to wrench it yourself or you're looking at a money pit....just my 2 cents.

Yea -- that is stupid cheap. I was recently at a shop out here in California and the going rate was $135/hr. I would use someone like that for any job that's PITA, or dirty, or easier/faster with a lift, or requires good amount of specialized equipment -- but that depends on what your own time is worth.

Agreed get it done professionally. Peter, Joe's car was simply amazing. I tried to get some of my buddies to buy it. Heck, I would have bought if I had the room.

TIP: If you pull the motor, replace the AC lines as they will be accessible. Since you want AC, its worth replacing them with new. They are next to impossible to replace with the engine, or at least top end, in the car.

$50/hr is DIRT MOTHERF*CKING CHEAP.
my mechanic is around 80/hr. doesnt seem like a stupid amout until it starts racking up.
seriously, if he's good, and you've got the cash, let him do it.
unless you either
A- REALLY want the experience
or
B- are a glutton for punishment.
