Check that he hoses going in and out of the reservior are tight.

If i were you, i woudl drain the fluid, replace the filter and gasket, clean up everything and put fresh fluid in there, it should be red and sweet smelling....not brown.

Any shifting problems?

I knew at once that's an auto; you're looking at the fill point and level indicator for the auto trans. So presumably there should be ATF in there? What's coming out definitely doesn't look (from the photos) like ATF.

Yes, it's a 477 p/n - that's a 924 part, the whole thing is 924 - engineered for the 2.0L, carried over to the 2.5L cars. My 924S is the same.

If that is actually coming out of the trans (which it kinda looks like it is), I'd want to make sure it's even ATF, and find out why the level's so high. You can see the upper and lower fill marks.

What kind of fluid do you think it is? Is there a possibility someone filled it with gear lube or something?

If that's what's in the trans, I'd want to empty it, replace the filter and pan gasket, and refill with fresh good ATF. If that is ATF coming out, it's horrendously burnt IMO. I'd wonder how it drives...

I'm off to my S to check the spec on trans fluid, but in both this and my previous 2.0L auto, I always ran ATF...

Thanks for the responses.

The car has been sitting for a few months and only started and driven a few blocks since about November. Before I stopped driving it regularly the car drove and shifted fine. I have never replaced the fluid or done repairs on it, but I'll look over the records from the P.O. to see if he has.

What baffles me is why it started flowing out when it did. A few months ago there was an oil stain below the same spot but it wasn't nearly as large.

I'll order the new parts and start replacing them though, I really appreciate the help.

I think someone told the 944 it's being sold, and the car is fighting back.

That's confusing; what are you planning on replacing?

Going out on a limb here, maybe there is a blockage somewhere in the trans and it's being over-pressurized? That seal being the weakest point. And that fluid looks cooked.

It looks like oil instead of ATF coming out of the auto trans. If you started it therefore overflowing, your tranny may be shot due to some sort of a blockage from the wrong type of fluid in it.

I haven't had the chance to start working on the car, but once I do I will drain the fluid and see what condition the seals are in to figure out what parts need replacing.

Battery is dead, but the car still shifts with no problems. Hopefully the tranny isn't shot. I'll post up some more photos when I get working on it this week.

I posted a simliar thread on Pelican, and someone suggested that the seal between the diff and tranny has let out, which would explain why the oil did not resemble ATF.

Does anyone have experience changing the seal, or is it something I should have a shop do?

It's possible that the seal is gone and the diff fluid is mixing with the atf.
Does the stuff leaking out really stink? ATF has little or no smell.

Burnt ATF will smell like a burnt pretzel.

now THAT'S funny!

Bad diff fluid smells terrible. does the tranny shift OK? Normal fluid level wil be indicated by a line on the resevoir. Is it possible it was overfilled prior?
IIRC atf level should be checked when warm and in gear.. If filled completely , then run the atf will expand and leak out the top (my cap has a vent hole) of the resevoir..

Worn ATF has no odor while fresh ATF has a distinct odor. Only the differential section of the auto trans uses oil. while the separate transmission section of the transaxle uses ATF. The part that is leaking is your auto transmission, which should contain NO oil and ONLY ATF.

Well it doesn't look good for me either way.

The car hasn't been run for a while, and I know it has not been overfilled within the last 2 years I've owned it. Should I even attempt to fix this myself, or should I get the car to a shop?

That car is good for another 60,000 miles Rock approved.
