Eh - I think both the flash and wave are dead. I pass a Cayenne pretty often on the road I live on and cannot even get a reaction. I passed a Boxter and a 930, same thing - sure is sad.......

around here (aledo/ft worth that is, there are about half a dozen porshces in waco...) I really only bother waving to anything mid-nineties an earlier - most boxster/996/997/cayenne owners aren't really enthusiasts, they just wanted to buy a porsche. of course there are some late model owners who know what's up, but I find that to be the exception, not the rule. I also wave to any sports car heading west on 377 on the weekends (motorsport ranch)

I never get waves in my 944. In my 914, I get occasional waves, but only from other old Porsche drivers. Some guy in a Beetle convertible wouldn't even look at me the other day in the 914. I guess the air-cooled VW engine connection took too much thought process to make. I don't even get waves from other old sports cars, like MGs. Maybe they think Porsche owners are snobs.

I waved at a very nice White 944 Turbo on Saturday heading to my son's basketball game. The problem is, I had one too many passengers and I was driving my wife's Ford Escape. He probably wondered who the nutcase was who was looking at his car, waving and giving him the thumpbs up.

I got a lot more waves when I had my Boxster than I do know. A couple weeks ago I passed a 996 Cab, and the guy didn't even look at me, but after trying to stay with me for 15 miles of twisty mountain roads, he gave me a big wave when I turned off. I guess I had to prove that I wasn't driving some peace of junk old Porsche.

Porsche really isn't really an enthusiast brand anymore.. ferrari, lamborghini haven't really come down to the middle class market yet so they may still have some of that exclusivity. Porsche is too common nowadays..
The whole wave thing is like a signal of "you know what I know" that the car is special.. everyone knows what it's like because everyone has a porsche nowadays.. Just how it is. enjoy your car and don't worry about it.

A 944 may be, a 930 911 may be... but when you wave to a boxster, 996, 997, even 993 in some cases.. it's a mass produced and mass bought car now. There's a different mentality, there isn't much taht separates them from a cadillac, or an escalade in their respective markets (as an example). I don't think those other types of cars have the owners waving to each othe rin most cases.
Regardless, it shouldn't really be a reason anyway.. People on the volvo mailing lists wave to every volvo they see.. personally I don't see when tehy actually have their hands on teh steering wheel then.. seems stupid to me.
It's just how i see the psychology of it working. It's a money symbol.. like owning a new range rover instead of a jeep.

It's the same with VW owners, but you can tell which ones are going to return the favour. It's the same situation, the older/rarer the model the better the odds. Some of the owners with newer models will as well if they fall in the OEM+ or very euro-mod category.
It's a shame that cars have become status symbols, not purchased for the driving experience.
