Okay - might have found the problem. Had a look at the Hall Sensor/sender that's on the dist. The connector and the wiring are in terrible shape. There is a good chance that an intermittent connection would be possible here - and from what I've learned from all the responses is that this would allow the car to run "okay" but with about 6 degrees of timing retradation - prolly enough to make a BIG differnce so that when the connection was good - the car will feel VERY strong. This is consistant with my experience so far.
How do I test the HS and how can I repair wiring harness damage upstream of the connector (but before the HS wiring loop gets wrapped into a larger section of the wiring harness)?
Thanks for all the help - I hope this is it!

wow never thought of that! I took the dist. off my 86 last nite and found the bolt for the rotor loose, the rotor hole was ovaled out and loose. Bet that was running great.

Fixed!
I temporarily fixed up the Hall Sender connection and soldered a dubious looking split in the wiring, car is running the best it's ever run since I've owned it. Power is strong and consistant rigtht as soon as the car is warmed up.
Thanks RENNLIST - you did it again!
