I am going through the pain of a busted transaxle and my search led me to a dealer who says the bearing pre-load on the pinion is absolutely critical and should be looked at every 60,000 Kms. I suppose if you just drive around the roads your not stressing the box but if you track it watch out. My problem came after a spirited drive on a race track three years ago and all this time i thought that slack was the clutch. It is a good plan to get the box serviced before you put it in.

Ding Ding Ding! We have a winner! I just got under the car for a look -- thank god the tranny is fine.

LOL! I did that once... I was gonna tell you to check that stuff.... I even went so far as to buy a new transmission... we were ready to pull mine out, and looked up, and the CV is disconnected from the wheel side... I'm like, "WTF?" and then bolt it up, fill the transmission with oil, an low and behold, wheels turned under engine power, and all the gears responded... NOTE TO SELF: DIAGNOSE BEFORE BUYING PARTS!
