Hard to say, if it was a daily driver i would have to say a STi also. Lots of car for the money. If i had alot of money to play around with maybe a E46 M3..love those cars.

Realistically though if i wanted to get out of the 944 game, i would be looking for a E36 M3.

In all seriousness - I drove a BMW e36 328i (manual) with a race suspension setup for about a year. This car bone stock is the next best thing to an M3 (and not a lot of difference). The handling was incredible, the creature comforts (other than those cancled out by the stiff suspension) were plentiful, and the appearance (in my opinion, and the opinion of many) was classy. I moved up to the 540i I currently have (linked above), and I can't wait to get back to the lightweight cars.

I've owned three BMW's now, and I can't wait to own a 951. Bang for the buck would seem to go to the 951. Have you seen the Tiff Needle(sp?) video with the 944 turbo? yeah.

I'm in love with the car. I have never come within 15 feet of one (to my knowledge), but God willing, it will be my next car, and as soon as I can sell my 540i.

If I didn't get a porsche, another e36 would be a sure-thing. Bangforthebuck in the e36 is the 325i in my opinion (having driven one several times, but owned a 328) and with a chip, intake, and exhaust you're challenging a stock M3, with a lot more fun rev. Cheaper to buy, cheaper to maintain, cheaper to mod, and potentially equally as fun.

I made a thread on bimmerforums.com about M3 versus 951 in an M3 forum - check out what the guys in the know on the other side of the fence said:

Hope i was helpful!

I would take an e36 3 series over a n/a 944 as they are wonderful cars to drive daily. I love the 944 but for the money, the bmw is a better, newer car needing less work (timing chain, more room under the hood, etc).

I might agree. non M e36 > na 944, while e36 M3 < 951

I will not replace my car. I will only suppliment my car, untill the wheels fall off.

However, if I were to replace it, it would be with a 951, 968, 911, Boxter, or a...
Ferrari Modial
or
or the 308 GTSi

or the Lotuds Caterham or Esprit
or this DeLorean

Or the ungodly awesome Morgan Aero

Gen II RX-7. The car never terribly excited me, and I had my choice of two when I bought my 944, but it's the hot car to have in the class I race in.

I'd upgrade to an air-cooled 911. Not in the same price range, but if I didn't get another 944 that's what I'd do.

83 or 84 GTI if I can find one in very good condition. Maybe an E30 of some sort.

I would say go for either a 968 or a air cooled 911. I have driven the boxters they are great cars but do not like they way the drive. I actually think my 944 is more fun to drive and I like the feel of it better. I say either go for the best porsche has to offer in an air colled 911 or the most refined 944 ever built in a 968.

A Monte Carlo SS Aerocoupe. But that would only be a daily driver/cruise machine. Most likeley tho, an early 90's volvo 740 turbo.

With the suspension worked over some, it would be a much quicker car than a 944 NA. Won't have the sports car feel though.

If I were to get rid of my 951 I wouldn't get another sports car because nothing except maybe a Testarossa would make me happy. I would probably get a bad *** sedan, like a BMW M5 or a new BMW 550.
