Default New To The 951 World

Hello all

I recently aquired a 1986 944t, I am a newbie to the Porsche world as well as turbo systems. I seek some guidance as I learn my way around this vehicle.

I have been doing some research and lurking these pages for a few weeks now.

For starters, I am focusing on basic maint/repairs...such as brakes, rough idle, misfiring, and such.

I am also interested in learning about some "starter" performance upgrades. I am not looking to build a race car at this point, but would like to have a mean street car and have fun at some autoX events.

I have seen that many people have experience vacuum leaks, is there a replacement hose kit available somewhere?

So anyhow, where should a newbie such as myself begin with the performance upgrades? Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Phil

Here is where I started. first I did a water pump, belt and full boat roller replacement (parts from Zims). Then I did the venturi delete and vacuum hose replacement (parts from lindsey racing) and deleted the cycling valve with an accuboost from boostsciences. Replaced BOV with the diverter from boostsciences as well. Replaced and converted the AC to 134a with a kit from Griffiths. then I replaced the coolant tank with a new one followed by complete hose replacement and new heater valve. New griffin radiator, polished power steering reservoir (bling) and Lindsey racing fuel rail. Next up is a tial wastegate and chips. That should hold me for a while. Oh, forgot the Bilstien Escort Cup Suspension upgrade on all four corners. I have been very pleased with every thing I have done to the car and all have given me a new found smile when I go for a ride. Have fun with the car!

Thanks for the quick responses, and thanks for the link.

I quess I should have specified that the operating condition will be brought up to par before any upgrades will be done. Overall the car is in great shape. It runs and drives fairly well, just needs a tune up. It has 40K miles on it, has been well maintained with service records, and garage kept. Overall, I am confident in the health of the vehicle.

Welcome Aboard!

I'm wrapping up my second most expensive month of ownership in two years, check the sig line.

PHP Code:
So anyhowwhere should a newbie such as myself begin with the performance upgradesAny suggestions
This has been beaten to death, there are 18+ years of modding these cars, the archives should give you plenty of cash burning ideas.

Figure out what you want to use the car for, and drop the $4-5K for the engine stuff and another $2-3K for suspension.

Congrats and welcome to porsche ownership!

Now, performance mods on these cars are like lighting money of fire, so if you have any do it now (light money on fire).

The search button along with Clarks-garge are you best friends. To sum performance upgrades quick, exhaust, tial wastegate and chips seem to bring these cars alive. Next would be MAF and turbo etc.

As Andial said, pics and location are a must

Sorry about that, I have updated my profile to include my location.

Here are a few pics. It is gaurds red with tan interior. The interior is in great shape with exception to the rear seat belt housings...the plastic is ripped and they need replace. Otherwise the interior is flawless.

These are rainy day pics, sorry for the poor quality.

...and yes, that is a dead spider in the gauge cluster.

Wastegate, chips, and new shocks are on the top of the upgrade list. Any recommended vendors?

-Phil

Nice car! That is only the 3rd one i've ever seen with the same interior as mine!

Vitesse Racing, Lindsey Racing and Speed Force Racing are the vendor's i'd suggest.

Car was originally from Mass, owner moved to the Philadelphia area last year. Found the car on ebay but did not bid since I discovered the auction on the last day. I emailed the seller to contact me if things did not work out with the high bidder. To my suprise they did not and I was able to meet up with the owner and pick it up locally a week after the auction. Paid $9700.
