Default Belt Tensioning? (Squealing)

I have recently purchased a 1988 944 Turbo S and noticed this evening that the car was squealing horribly, so LOUD! I would sit at a light and just rev with the clutch disengaged and the squeals would scream out. The times it does this is, when I start the car it will do it for a few minutes. Sometimes while im driving. Sometimes when I stop.

Does this sound like a Belt?

Its not the roaring noise of a power steering pump. Its in for sure a high pitched intense squealing sound coming from the engine bay.

Thanks

Tighten the alternator belt or power steering belt. With the car stopped, turn the steering wheel.. if the squeel gets worse its the power steering. With the car at idle, turn on all electrical items, rear defrost, headligtts..etc. If you get more squeel its likely alternator, but that is not a sure 100% method. Timing belt and balance belt will not squeal as they are notched.

Mine is squealing like a stuck pig when I turn on the A/C, need to adjust the belt. What is the proper amount of deflection on the Alt/AC belt?

it gets pretty tight, ive also tightened them before while it was running-brave- but if its squeeling you can tighten it until it stops.

Another perspective.

I put new belts on and had some squealing. Tightened them up and everything was good for about 2 weeks. Tuesday morning a squeal returned worse than ever and did not improve after the car ran for a few seconds. It turns out that the squealing this time is from bad clutch bearings. The squeal is present when the clutch is not depressed.

Moral is: don't always assume that squealing noises are from belts. Bearings make a horrible squealing noise when they go bad.

Best of luck.

Good point. But I am sure that it is the belts.

Tensioner rods can be reached only from under the car. Soak them liberally in PB Blaster or screwloose to free them up...if you have not had them adjusted in some time they are likely rusted / corroded together. Hit the threads with a small amount of anti-seize to prevent this in the future.

Alternator belt should have something like 4mm of deflection at the longest span. Its really tight.
