Default OT: Help! how to drive unregistered 944 home

I'm picking up my turbo sunday in Indy and driving home. Obviously it will be unregistered. I have been given various ideas on what is the best way to not get my car towed.

The car will be insured.I will have title and bill of sale with me as well as sellers cell phone number should my story need to be checked out.

1) should I drive with no plate and just be honest?

2) Should I drive with a plate from one of my other cars and bring that registration with me?

And because of this, I don't plan to go more than 5mph over the speed limit the whole boring way back to Denver.

If the car doesn't have tags that you can "borrow" from the PO for the trip home, see if he is willing to go to the DMV and get a temporary tag. I would not drive without a tag, nor would I use a tag off another car, unless it was another 944.

You should also be able to go to your DMV and get temp tags. Most likely just a piece of paper to put in your window for the drive.

I would in the same order:

- Borrow the plate from the current owner
- Borrow a plate from another car
- Borrow the plate from the current owner and get a temp tag.
- Be pulled over for having no tags at all.

The PO does not have tag - he owns euromotorworks in indy and drives it with the dealer plate which i can understand why he won't let me borrow.

My DMV won't give me a temp without a title in hand and in person.

Even here, it is split opinion. Put on other cars tag or go no tag. I think I am leaning towards royalschwarz did and going with no tag. Cops get lied to all day long and erring on the side of honesty might help.

When I picked my 951 up I was faced with a 40 mile drive with no tags if the DMV closed before I got served... I called a bandmate who is a cop in one of the cities which I'd be driving through and asked him which of those two I should do.

He told me that driving without a plate increases the risk of being stopped, though a bill of sale and a signed title should get you off with a warning or a 'talking to'. However, while putting another car's tag on may well reduce the "pull him over" risk, if you DO get pulled over, then driving with a wrong tag on is "take him downtown" time. -He told me it was my choice. If I got stopped on his patch, I was to call him immediately... -as in before the officer who stopped me walked up to my car. (He's still on voicedial). If I got stopped somewhere else, -on someone else's patch- he'd light a candle for me and say three hail Mary's.

Both are wrong, one advertises itself a little more openly, but the other is definately more fraudulent, and if you happen to be in Po-Dunk county, you might spend a few hours in the Bütt-ƒù¢k penitentiary.

You spins da wheel, you takes yer chance.

I got lucky. the line sped up and I got my tag before they closed. I enjoyed the boost all the way home!

Putting a tag from a different vehicle on a car is illegal in most states. Car will get impounded and you will get booked in most states. driving with no tag at all will get you pulled over and vehicle impounded. It's along way from Indy to Denver. I would hate to get out in the middle of nowhere North Dakota and get my car impounded. If he's a car dealer, can't he get you a temporary tag in Indiana? When I bought mine, he was in Florida and I'm in Oklahoma, he mailed me the title. I took it and the insurance verification to a tag office and got it. I picked up the car in Tulsa and put it on right there.

Getting a title means I pay for the car before I see and drive it. Although I have done my due diligence I'd rather not buy a car without seeing it.

I guess the safer of the two would be to put a plate from a different car on it and go 1 mph UNDER the speed limit the whole way home. Thankfully the cruise control on the car works.

It will be a game time decision.

It is illegal to drive the car til it is registered in your name. If you are caught in Florida with the plate from another car you will be arrested or given a notice to appear in court in 10 days. It is considered illegal use of tag. Ask me how I know. Even with the notice to appear, it still cost me almost $2000 in court and legal fees to straighten it all out and they impounded the car and the PO had to come down and bail it out.

I dont know about the driving without a tag, but when I had my dealership, I strongly advised against it. According to our DMV rep, it was just as illegal as sticking some other tag on there.

So you might get away with it, but look at the possible alternative. How far away is it? Is it in the same state? If it is in the same state, you can go pay for the car, then go directly to the tag office near his house and register it with the PO. Then you are safe. If it is out of state, REALLY be careful driving it.

Check with your tag office. They might be able to issue a temp tag for transportation purposes. I used to issue them all the time for people to drive cars home to differant states.

Good luck and be safe.

Done it many times, but have you ever been stopped?? I have driven over 100mph many times too, but most people would say never to do that. It is stupid, and you can go to jail.

So attempt it if you want, but remember it is illegal. You can run the same stop sign 50 times and never get stopped, but it only takes one time for a cop to be sitting there.

Or better yet, borrow a truck, if you dont have one, and rent a tow dolley from Uhaul for $35. Then you are legal.

Good luck again. But just be careful. You will most likely get away with it, but......................Why take the chance when there are inexpensive options.

You can purchase temporary plates that last 3 days. At least you can in AZ. The cost is around 70 dollars I believe, but don't quote me on that.

I can't imagine, or at least find it hard to believe, that if this guy is a car dealer, he can't get you a temporary tag. We have 'em here all the time. Used or new, doesn't matter.

I have been stopped many times for speeding and been given warnings instead of a ticket. So what. It does not make it legal. You just got a nice guy and very lucky. I was not so lucky and it cost me a whole lot more than the relatively small amount you would spend on some of our suggestions.

I would suggest you call the DMV and ask them. They may tell you to come down and get a temp tag for $5. As a dealer the temp tags used to cost me $2 each. I know I have gotten them in the past from the tag office outside the dealership to transport cars.

I wouldnt take the chance without first calling the DMV and making sure.

Also, I did not realize this guy was a dealer???? He should be able to give you one to transport. If he is selling it legitamately(IE not just handing you an open title) then he should be able to give you a temp tag. The DMV here did not care who I gave them to, as long as I had a record of selling them a car and I kept the record for the temp tag on hand.

If he is a dealer and wont give you a temp tag, there might be something else wrong. Look into it before you hand over the cash.

If the seller is a car retailer he should be able to provide you with temporary tags. I purchased my car in Maryland from an auto wholesaler and he provided me with 60 day Maryland temporary tags.

Just have all your paperwork in the car and drive carefully. If you put bogus plates on the car and get pulled over it's worse than having incomplete DMV papers. Just be honest, most officers will understand and give you a fix-it ticket if you give them an honest excuse.
