20W50 too heavy?

My 951 ran fine on 15W-50. I am not sure why the 924S didn't like it. After reading the Panorama article I am going to move all my cars to 0W-40. (BMW dealer made the same recommendation for my 740il)

Thin oil works better then it used to, but for track use and longevity under those conditions, a thicker oil (opinion) is required. Using 0-40 in a 100k miles 944 engine does not sound like a good idea.

yeah, i was thinking if it takes that long for pressure to build and oil to reach the lifters, and he's getting bad running with heavy oil, there's a problem with the motor.

i think now that summer's here, i'm going to go to 15-50........just have to find a good one first.......damn you mobil 1.........

My 924S is for street use and I change the oil religiously every 3k miles. The 924S has 57k original miles. My 951 has 2k miles on a rebuilt engine.

The S2 is good with 20w50. These cars also tend to have more lifter noise than the 8 valve cars, even with brand new lifters (I know). Don't forget that you are also hearing all 4 of the injectors firing at the same time, all the time, so that also tends to add to the noise level in that engine bay.

It's fine, they all do that.

I've been running 5w50 in my 951. Works just fine. Burns very little oil.
I'm changing to 50 (single grade) next week.

I switched the 951 to Mobil 1 0w-40 from 15W-50 during the last oil change. The 951 is heavily modified and is 80% for DE days and will later be for more serious track. It has an upgraded oil system including an additional oil cooler. Since the temperatures are very moderate in Seattle, I was planning on staying on 0W-40 and changing the oil often. Both the 924S and 951 run very cool. They rarely cross the quarter mark on the temperature gauge even in stop and go traffic.

Another Mobil 1 15w-50 user here, on an '88 951. Runs great, uses about a 1/2 quart between oil changes.

Redline 50 weight has the same ability to change viscosity as their 20w50. However, they don't recommend it for street use as it doesn't have all the anti-sludge additives and the like, so it will tend to clog things up unless you get it up to temp and keep it there - say like tracking the car. ;-)

Amsoil and the other "straight weight" oils will be similar.

Well, it's single grade so they only use one value.

I run my 1990 S2 on 10W-40 Castrol Magnatec (Syntec in the states). Runs fine. It has been on 10W-40 Mobil for the last 10 years. No lifter noise at all - but they have only been in for 14,000km (8,700 miles).

When I bought the car I asked the local dealer their recommendation about oil as I planned on using 5W-40 (I usually keep a good stock of it for my two Saab 9-5's and I figured I standardise all cars on the same oil). Their advice was "don't do it". Too thin for a Porsche of that age, especially one with a few miles (151,000km / 93,830 miles).

Yes, Porsche currently recommend 0W-40 Mobil 1, but the real reason is probably that since it is the factory fill oil these days, they will recommend it accross the board. A thin oil is fine if you live in very cold territory, or you have a new (or turbo) motor, but I definitely would not recommend it for an older car.

Talk to your local OPC or whoever does the work for you and see what they recommend - chances are it will be at least a 10W oil.
