M1 0w40 ior Redline 5w40 are excellent choices...all Porsche recommeded oils are 40 wts. 50 wts are too heavy...they will not provide more protection and may contribute to higher oil temps.

My car has run SWEPCO 20W50 from new (210,000 miles) and drinks almost nothing between changes (every 3,000 miles). Of course I'm in Florida, where it can be 85°F on Christmas day, but oil pressure is 2-3 Bar at hot idle, and everything looks good.
I'm given to understand that SWEPCO can be stiff at startup in cold climates, so take that into consideration, however, in a hot climate, approaching a quarter-million miles has made a believer outta me!
And yes, Castrol misleadingly brands both it's fully-synthetic and synthetic blend oils "syntec". Syntec just means the oil in the can has "synthetic technology"... either 50% or 100%, you have to think about it. Maybe other oil companies are similarly misleading, but Castrol is always the one that springs to my mind as the worst culprit.
I have run Castrol in my VW for maybe 15,000 miles, but the other 110,000 miles have been with Mobil 1 5W40... Mobil's not what it used to be, so I might switch to Castrol for the VW, but the 951 STAYS with 20W50 Swepco.

i can't believe you guys! i only use extra virgin olive oil in my baby! haha, j/k of course, actually bgiere is right, porsche recomends only 0w40 or 5w40, summer or winter. the lower # is the viscosity cold (low is good) and the high # is the viscosity hot. this according to a technical article in Panorama mag. i currently have 20/50 in there but am going to try the 0/40 at my next change, i just acquired this info!

I switched from the 20w-50 dino to the synthetic 0w-40 and the engine leaked oil everywhere, necessitating an apparently overdue front seal job.

Neither my 924S or 951 leak or burn a drop on M1 0w-40. I read someplace that the molecule size in synthetic oils is smaller than dino oil increasing the amount of leaking with bad seals. However, the smaller and consistant molecular size is what provides superior lubrication over dino oil.

I cant believe that I am the only one who has converted my fleet to synthetic HD (diesel) oil.....???? I run Shell Rotella T synthetic 5/40 in all my vehicles including my lawnmower and motorcycles. Specialty diesel oils (Rotella, delo, delvac, super blue, etc) are far superior to conventional oils, and then if you get them in a full synthetic, they are magic. I can buy the Rotella T synthetic in the gallon at wally world for $14.

Does 20w-50 make a huge difference in performance acceleration wise and MPG wise compared to 10w-40 or 15w-40 or any other 40 weight oil? I am running 20w-50, I just changed the oil, but I might change when I get some money if I can get a couple more miles to the gallon. Could 10w-30 be run in these cars? Also my cars valve seals leak so I burn some oil no matter what kind it is.

heavier dino.
FWIW, there have been some threads on oil (ok, a lot) and i've heard that the stuff in dino oil helps keep gaskets and seals closed.
honestly- in an n/a i used some of that Engine Restore stuff you find at autozone.
now, i know people will say it's just viscous **** that clogs up your motor, or that it's just gunk, but swear on my mother, it worked. my 944 stopped leaking and it actually ran a little bit better.
not saying it'll work for you, just giving my personal experience.
