Default Question for the one who knows everything about the 944: What the hell is this for?

I was messing around with my gauge cluster today, since I had to get in there to replace a couple of bulbs. I was shining a light through the openings, to see what each of the backlit warning lights say. Well, there were a bunch of blank ones and openings behind them where bulbs whould go if there were used. however, this one had a bulb in it, which leads me to believe it's used for something. After all, if it was just a redundancy, or something used in another car that uses the same gauge cluster, there would be no bulb in it, right?

So, anyone have any idea what turns this on? Anyone ever seen it actually lit up?

Turn signal indicator comes on when the turn signal is activated in either direction.

isnt there one in the speedo too though? Maybe that one is for cars w/ different guages...ive seen that. My old 79 mustang had a Turbo light that wasnt hooked up. I made it so it would come on when the seat belt light came on. Closest thing i had to a turbo when i was 16.

Just put is back in the car and drive it! Sorry, could that be for the emergency flashers.

I thought you were from the North east where the turn signal arm on the steering colum is optional equipment. Nobody uses a turn signal up here, so most car manafactures made it optional equipment.

There's also one for ABS warning (boy, those guys thought ahead! ABS wasn't introduced until '87) and I believe one for airbag warning (not released until '86) in addition to the double-arrow one. I think there are actually one or two others I'm forgetting (brake pad warning or something maybe), but yea - I noticed that as well. Perhaps these were used on the 959 or another car (same cluster) or just "thinking ahead" to future features on later years. Pretty cool in any case.

I always thought it'd be hella slick to rig up a radar detector warning to one - very stealth that way.

It's possible the supplier (VDO ?) supplied the bulb with the gauge regardless of the car it was going to be used in.

Default Turn signal indicator

That looks a lot like the turn signal light on my 83 N/A... No matter which signal's on, it just flashes. I'm guessing that the gauge that's in is a standard gauge, and some other car that got that same set happened to not have the directional turn signal indicator.

blgdaddy- You rock!

That second indicator arrow is used when you have a trailer hooked up. It just tells you that the trailer lights are indeed flashing.

Don’t ask me if I have ever seen a 944 towing a trailer… I haven’t.

There are actually different late gauge clusters....I bought one to send out to NH speedometer a while back and found that it did not have the airbag light....so I had to buy another one from a later, late 944 to make sure I got one with the airbag light.

944 with trailor lol!!!! But I think our gauge cluster is also used in the 928 the same gauge cluster so possibly some of the indicators could be from the 928.

I looked at picures of 928 clusters, the turn signal is sometimes where ours is, under the ! light, and other times it is on the opposite side of where the blue light is for our hing beams.

The DareDevil, err, really? if you haven't seen it, where did you hear that. That's the only thing that I've heard so far that makes even a bit of sense, but where is the plug to connect a trailer (if you really want to pull a trailer with a 944)
