Tow Hook
Is there a place to mount a tow hook on a 1987 944S? I already had the pleasure of gettng stuck on the track and when the tow vehicle came out they had to radio in for a flat bed. Not good!!

I assume you mean in the rear... For a quick and easy rear tow hook, get a axle strap tie down and loop it over the rear bumper support/shock. Zip tie the ends toghther and you have a tow hook. Before buying the KLA industries bumper mount hook, I used the above method to get pulled out of gravel traps a couple of times. Most of the 944 racers in Chicago have this set up and no body/bumper damage from getting pulled out. I could post a pic tomorrow if you like

doesnt everyone have a little place where you can screw in an eye in the front?
are the tow hooks on the rear of my 951 not stock? cuz they look pretty stock.
wow, i guess my car was tracked before.......or broke down a lot......
is there any way to put tow brackets (that's what i call them) on the front? i mean, like a mounting point?

yeah what skip said. Drill the front bumper out and mount that tow eye near/behind your license plate. Where can i get some rear shock mount tie down loops?

I don't have any pictures handy but I used steel U-bolts that were about 3/8" thick, and approximately a 3" diameter bend, they came with a flat plate and two nuts. I threaded nuts all the way up, taped off the threads and painted them red with Rustoleum. I got 2 more nuts to hold them to the bumper (I used nyliner locking nuts). I don't have any license plates because it is a track car so I drilled some holes and put them in the center of the bumper, both front and rear. Slide the U-bolt into the holes put the backing plate on and tighten the two locking nuts, piece of cake. The bumpers were off my car when I did it but you can probably do it with them on, as long as you can reach the backside of the bumper with a small ratchet. Total cost was around $10 (for around $20 you could use the stainless U-bolts and skip the painting step).
I questioned the wisdom of mounting a tow hook to the bumper but the 944 NA bumpers are really robust, like 1/4" thick aluminum. Unless your car is absolutely buried in gravel and the tow truck takes a running start I don't think there will ever be a problem, and if there is I'd rather do damage to the cheap replaceable bumper than the car itself.
