Default 16 x 8 early backspacing...

I ordered a set of 16 x 8 replica fuchs, early offset for my 1986 944 turbo. The company said that the backspacing on the 8's are 10mm. Is this correct? I thought that 16 x 8 phone dials were 23mm for both the 7's and 8's.

Actually, 10mm offset is correct for the early 8" wheels. Backspacing is much more. There is a big difference between backspacing and offset.

Thanks for the info. I am replacing my pd's on my track car, three out of four are bent in one way or another. My car is lowered/balanced and the 16 x 8 factory offest fits beautiful...

You're right, and I can't read. Well, I'm pretty sure you're right. Could you send me a couple 8" Fuchs you're stashing so that I can make my own measurements? I'll send them back.... eventually.

I actually ordered a set of 4 16 x 8 10mm offset "replica" fuchs from wheelsandcaps.com. I recall they weigh about 18lbs each, made in italy and are polished lip/black centers. I felt that for a new set of track wheels this was a good buy @599.00 for all four. I had purchased a set of phone dials(16 x 7/8) and when we went to mount them up BOTH 8's were bent beyond use...

Fresh out of 8" Fuchs. Sold them. I've got (8) 15x7s though. I also have (4) 15x7 Cookies and (8) 15x7 BBS. I've also promised my wife I'd get rid of some of them. Gotta blast them and repaint them first though.

mjensen: What offset are the phone dials you have? I've been looking on Sherwood Lee's site and he lists 911 16x8 Fuchs as 10.6mm offset and 951 16x8 Fuchs and 'dials as 23.3mm offset. If you look at Danno's picture and do a little math I think you'll see that you'll be real close to the lip of the front fender, depending on how wide your tire is you might have to roll your fender lip for clearance. Of course you'll run a little more negative camber than stock so that will give you a little more clearance too.

Geo: At some point I'll have to figure out what I'm going to run on the 944. I have a set of Fuchs (2 gold, 2 black) that I've collected, a set of cookies, a set of BBS and a set of 'dials. I think I want to standardize on cookies for the track, the BBS wheels seem heavy and besides my tie down straps won't fit through the spokes. That's if that is how I decide to tie the car to the trailer, I haven't settled on that either.

I agree regarding the weight of the BBS. Quite frankly I was shocked. They are clearly heavier than the cookies, let along the Fuchs.

Just as an aside, I pressure washed the engine bay and chassis today. All I need to do is remove the windshield and I'm doing paint prep. I'm really looking forward to getting the paint on this car. I have the wiring harness out and I'm going to map it and restore it, replacing any critical wires that are the least bit questionable.

Rockfan, I am running 16 x 8 phone dials, 23mm offset. I was not positive that the 16 x 6 replica fuchs 10mm offset were either different or listed different. I thought I was ordering the identical offset for my car. I am concerned about the clearance, I am running 245/45/16 RA1's, car is lowered, balanced and running -3.5 camber with ledas. Will this offset cause problems? I don't mind if I have to roll the fenders I just do not want to open up a can of worms...

We should have had this conversation earlier this week. I was in Fond du Lac over the weekend and I probably could have stopped over and checked out your car.

245 on the front is going to be tight, but it should work out OK with the camber you're running. One thing I'd do before mounting the tires on the rims is verify the wheels will clear the brakes, since they're aftermarket and might be a little different on the back.

I did some homework and I cancelled the replica wheels. I made a bunch of phone calls to numerous vendors and had little if any luck with finding what I wanted to run. I was referred by Jason @ paragon products to call Chip @ CCW wheels. CCW is going to build me a set of 16 x 8 23mm offset three-piece race wheels in about 2 1/2 to 3 weeks. Compared to the used prices(BBS, etc.), new or referbished phone dials, or different wheels with adapters, I felt I made a good call. My goal was to buy new wheels that are track worthy and gives me a compromise with good tire selection. I hope this works...
