Gas or fume smell in car

Gas or fume smell in car
I have noticed an ongoing smell of either gas or exhaust fumes in the interior of my car. It doesn't seem to be leaking gas. And I think the exhaust pipes are ok. It doesn't sound too loud so I don't think there's a hole somewhere. The underside is really dirty. I guess from old oil leaks and so on. Any ideas what it could be? Thanks

One possible cause could be the seal for the fuel gauge sender. I had this issue in my 944 and 951 both. The sender is mounted at the top of the fuel tank and is accessable from the interior in the hatch/cargo area. Pull out the rear carpet. Once exposed You will see silver insulation tape. Carefully remove the tape and underneath you will see a round plate with slotted screws around it. This is the top of the fuel gauge sender. When I got to this point, this area was wet with fuel. If yours is wet with fuel, the rubber seal has failed. You can purchase the seal at the Porsche parts counter. It probably is a non-stock, order item. To repair, just remove the slot headed screws, pull out the sender and replace the gasket.
There are other items which can allow fuel vapor to be released into the interior. The filler neck, and carbon fuel canister vapor lines are all routed inside the cabin. These items are located under a sheetmetal cover in the rear cargo area, passenger side.
Not the smartest design. I wonder what Porsche was thinking when they routed all these items inside the cab.

I pulled up the carpet. On the passenger side I found a round piece of plastic. I pulled it up and found, what I guess, is the fuel sender. It was dry. I was thinking maybe it had leaked in the past and the smell is coming from the carpet. But the sender appears to be the original.

also try looking for leaks in the filler neck bellows and the spillover drain in the filler well outside. to do the first you have to take up the carpet and remove the protective housing around the filler neck inside the car.
