FYI: Alternative to LOCTITE 574
So far I have succeeded in finding an alternative to Loctite 574. The only place I could get some for a cheap price was Pelican Parts. However, I was reccommended Permatex Anaerobic sealant for the lower girdle holding the crankshaft, and oil pump. The part no. for the Anaerobic sealant is #51845. After about 1,000 miles so far on the motor, I have had no leakage coming from the oil pump, balance shaft covers, and issues with the girdle. I pulled the pan to redo the oil pan gasket over again due to the Yamabond failing to seal. At the time I noticed that the girdle was also sealed tight.
So, if you guys are looking for a substitute for Loctite 574 anaerobic sealant, try using the Permatex Anaerobic Gasket Maker.

not to hijack my own thread because I had stated this in my Rebuild Thread, the mating surface of the pan and crankcase was not designed for adhesives that are thin, or thick like RTV silicone. The pan gasket was and still is applied dry from the factory with just gasket maker on the 4 corners where the pan dips to allow the crankshaft to dip the rods into the oil below.
Those who applied Yamabond and succeeded, I applaud you. I couldn't do it right, and I won't ever recommend it because it's a lot easier to put it on dry, get the right amount of torque on the bolts, and not worrying about the Yamabond causing the gasket to become slippery and bulge out. Sorry, it's just my way of doing it....no disrespect to anyone who uses Yamabond

Suppose I should have been a little clearer, my pan gasket went on dry, still is, no leaks. (rear main is another story) Again, I attribute this success to clean surfaces.
Crank girdle and balance shaft seals were done with Yamabond... oil pressure is excellent and the shafts don't leak a drop.

I used loctite 518. Much thicker than 574, so you just run a bead of it on all surfaces you want to seal, then press together. No rollers involved or anything, super easy to apply.
Then again, I couldn't locate 574, so I worked with what I had. So far 6000 miles, no leaks from the balance shafts, and oil pressure is excellent.

+1 on the Permatex Anaerobic Gasket Maker. I've used it in place of the Loctite 574 on two complete engine builds everywhere that calls for an Anaerobic sealer. No leaks on either motor. I was told about it by a friend who has used it on many more 944 motors that I'll ever build.

^^^^What he said. I used permatex anaerobic gasket maker on the oil pan gasket, balance shaft housing, valve cover, oil cooler housing, water pump. All with no leaks. Thick, very tacky, red, but wipes up easily.
