Default is it OK to mount tires of different size?

another question about tires:
I'm considering mail-ordering tires, and replacing 215/60 15 with 225/50 15.
Will a local tire shop mount them, considering this is not a factory-recommended size?
or they would tell me this is unsafe?
thanks.

As long as the rim is atleast 7-inches wide i dont think it will be a problem.

A funny thing relating to this. I just bought a set of 16x7 and 16x8 D90's. The tires sizes on them are 225/50/16 and 245/50/16. I was looking at one of the 'back' wheels and saw the tire was bulging alot (the side wall). Upon closer inspection one of the numbnutz that mounted the tires put the 245 on a 7-inch rim...which is really a big no-no.

thanks. I'm not sure if I made it clear. I know local guys do similar size changes, so it should work from technical point of view. The question is whether tire shops accept such request!

I don't see why it'd be a problem.

The PO that had my car did the same thing: 205's up front with one 7 and one 8 inch wheel, 225's in back with one 7 and one 8 inch wheel. Numbnutz X 2.

I've never had a shop even look twice when mounting tires of larger size than stock. As long as it's not something ridiculous, I doubt you'll have a problem.

I used to run 225-50-15 Yoko A008's on mine for track days. I never had any problem with my local tire dealer but the times are increasingly litigious; you may have to shop around to find someone who will do it.
