Unhappy car quits while driving and at idle

need help with my 87 944 when i drive it in town it will just quit, sometimes it will start back up but most time it wont. and if I park it some where and try to start it the thing just cranks over every now and then it will start. I dont know to much about the DME system. I also think its running a little lean. Aslo it seems to running hotter than normal for this time of the year. This car has very low mileage for a 1987 with 88,000 miles. Any help with this would be great. Thank you

Get a new DME relay. Those get fussy and cause the car to do what you describe. If it's not this, then you've got a spare for when it is!

How old is the gas in the tank? I had problems in the winter when I used the car infrequently and kept the car below half a tank. Some Drygas for fuel injection engines is an even cheaper thing to try than a DME relay.

No. Why do you think your car is running lean?

I think its running to rich for two reasons 1: after hard accelertation I call smell the exhaust has a funny smell, 2: the engine is running hotter then normal for the temp of the weather. I ordered a new DME relay today should be in two days I`ll give that a try.

The gas in the tank is only a few days old, however the problem seems worse when at half a tank or below, but this is probly just a fluke. when the car runs if I take it out for a long run it does not act up, but when I come back in to town the car acts up, this is really starting to get old. If you know what I mean.
