New 951 owner
Hello all. I just registered for this stie because I'm a new 951 owner. I actually haven't gotten the car yet. I bought it off of eBay last week and am having it shipped to me. The car is a 1986 944 Turbo, it's highly modified and 90% rebuilt engine, new front seats, brakes, wheels, tires. It's got a Vitesse stage II kit on their with 3 inch exhaust and all other go fast parts. The only thing I have to replace is the A/C compressor, it won't hold a charge. The car also has a $4k paint job. I can't wait for it to get here.
A few questions:
1. What kind of oil should I use? The car is a weekend car, maybe 5000 miles a year.
2. What else should I check for in reparing the A/C? I was told it has "all new seals" and a new dryer.
3.IS it worth putting a Timing belt tensioner on the car like the 87's and above have? What value do they add??
Any assistance would be greatly apprecited?
Also, I'm in Atlanta, anyone else here from Atlanta? would love to find some local 951 owners.
Thanks,
Chris

Welcome to 951 ownership. Sounds like a great car. I have had mine about 5 years and love it. This forum is a great place to learn about your car. There is also one specifically for 951's which is useful also.
1. Look at your owners manual for factory viscosity recommendations. I use Castrol 20W-50.
2. Mine is broken also and I am clueless.
3. I heard you cannot update to the new tensionsers but it must be possible at some level. It is really not necessary if you tension the belts with the proper tool.
Make sure the cam and balance shaft belts have been replaced. 30K miles seems to be the length of time people are comfortable with.

Thanks. I know all belts were replaced about 2000 miles ago. I had the car checked out locally and he said the only thing was the A/C. The guy I'm buying it from put over $17k in it. He finished the car about 3 months ago. I hope someone here steps up with an answer on the A/C.

- i use 15-40 either shell rotella like the book recommends or castrol 15w-40. The tensioner can be updated but you have to cut out the rear belt cover to clear it some. A/C get a new dryer, swap the oil in the compressor for a PAG or 134a adaptable type, vac it down and check for leaks. Replace any leaky seals and recharge w/ 134a.

From: Central Illinois. Cornfields a plenty.
I am a religious Mobil 1 user, others have individual favorites.
In 9 years of running this car I have NEVER had an oil leak.
well, except for that oil change in Pete's Garage.. and when my oil pan gasket went..
Best of luck and Welcome to Rennlist!
