I have never cared for the MPG gauge in the tachometer of my '86 944. For the past few years, it hasn't worked anyways. So, I recently purchased a used gauge face from a later car (I got it from 944 Ecology), and swapped it out for the gauge face from my tachometer. (I was very careful in removing and replacing the needle. It does look mighty delicate!) No more MPG gauge! I wish I had thought to do this many years ago.

I like my mpg gauge, too.
When the engine whispers, "Go faster, pass that minivan," that little gauge encourages me to drive more responsibly
It's nice seeing that little needle sitting on 30mpg
Money saved on gas = more money for repairs & maintenance

I guess 968s never came with one, however my early 944s have it. I like that gauge, and it does encourage me to drive more conservatively. Though I can see how it would be annoying to see a dead gauge every day.
That shift light (I think only in early 944s) really bugs people too, but I noticed if I actually listen to it, I save gas!

What all is involved in installing one in an early car / 924S? Remove old tach gauge, install combo gauge, or are there other parts also associated with it? I don't remember seeing any extra wires last time I had the gauges out.

Its a simple swap out to add one to a car that didnt come with it. At least for the early interiors (924S). I actually added one to my car, no wiring needed. Plug and drive!

I just finished changing out my gauges on my 83 944 to the 924 style and love them. Got the 924 shifter as well. Easier to keep clean than the leather dust catcher. I got rid of my mpg gauge and now I have an up-shift light.

time to get a wheel man, that would make it look sooo much better. You really never know how a good aftermarket wheel will help until you get one and damn youll never go back to stock.
