Default Squealing noise – what could it be?

Hey everyone,

The last 3 times I have started my 944 NA, there is a rather loud squealing noise that lasts a few minutes and then stops.

It only happens when I start the car, never when I am driving it.

What could this be?

A belt?

Thanks as always!

Possibly the power steering or alternator belt is a little loose. The squeal goes away because the belt contracts as it gets warmer.

Simply put the car on ramps or jack the front up. Take off the belly pan if you still have it, then tighten the tensioning rods. The alternator belt should be fairly tight, i believe 3-4 mm of deflection if you push it down at the longest span. The PS belt ive never used a tool to measure...i just kinda set it where it feels right.

Sounds like an alternator or power steering belt to me. It could also be your a/c pump, PS pump, or an idler on the balance shaft belt or timing belt.

The easiest thing is to check the tension on the alternator and PS belts. The alternator belt on these cars has to be fairly tight.

Mine was the balance shaft belt. I had the exact same problem. I opened it up today to find that the thrust washers were broken and the belt was off the sprockets.
Not to scare you.

Ok, well maybe this will help...

The alternator gauge goes down during the squealing and then goes back up when it stops.

Also, it started doing it while driving and my lights were on, I turned the lights off and the squealing stopped.

Alternator belt?

Sounds like the alternator belt to me..a good test is when the car is cold..turn on the rear defroster and headlights (these will put a higher electrical load on the alternator)..if it starts to squeel or chirp, tighten the belt up.

And i wouldnt worry about the balance belt, it is a ribbed belt, so it wont slip causing a squeal...it will however jump teeth on the sprockets causing other problems .

A squeal when starting or when lights or AC is turned on is always
a loose alternator belt on any make of automobile.

Try to tighten the belt before buying a new one. If you get confused with how to tighten the belt, check back here.

Belt. Bad belt. Loose Belt. Cheap belt. I agree with all above.

Could also be bad bearings in altenator, causing severe friction. Belts. Check first. Replace/tension first.
