is this the right balance shaft seal?

Hello,
i'm i the midst of changing my balance shaft belts and all the related seals on my '87 na 944. originally the dismantling took place 3months ago and upon ordering the parts from a retailer both myself and and friend can't seem to figure something out for certain. on the end of the balance shaft housing, to the front of the engine, there goes a seal, which we thought was a rubber type seal but in looking at the parts sent from the retailer, we have two mylar type seals that we don't know if they are correct. in looking at the picture, can anyone advise on these seals? they don't seem to be right, are they?
in the picture2, i have what i believe is the spacer (frontseal2) (part number 928-105-139-02), the reddish seal is an oil seal, just used to hold up the spacer, and i have two of the seals (frontseal3) that are in question.
sorry the pic was too large in resolution to just have it together.
thanks,
-nffn

Yes those are right, check the back of the balance shaft spacer the old ones may still be on there. Actually you should have 3 of those, one goes on the camshaft as well.

yes... it should go (IIRC)
Mylar gasket---> metal thingy in your pic --> brownish rubber seal
Make sure, with the brownish rubber seal, you put the PROPER one on the proper balance shaft... there is a slight size difference. they are marked with rotational arrows, and since the balance shafts counter spin, it'll be the direction of rotation of that particular shaft. the old seals will show these arrows too.
That said, I beleive the top balance shaft (driver's side) rotates clockwise... don't take my word for that.

Facing the front of the engine
Upper shaft rotates clockwise
Lower shaft rotates counter clockwise
Inspect the spacers (metal collars) carefully for grooves. If they are not perfect, replace them or the new seals will leak in short order.
I cannot count the number of times i have posted this list, but here it is again in the hope it will help decipher the parts you have, and prompt further investigation.

Thank you Wolfe, Sracer, Porshephile and Cruise, pretty comprehensive list Cruise, I ordered the parts and like I said we were surprised by the part provided, but if that is it, then we'll install them. The package did come with a number of them, since i don't have the kit in front of me, i'll have to check this weekend when i go to the garage.
Thanks again,

hello,
on the very inside of the spacer in picture 1, there is a groove. when we took this apart, we can't remember this, but is there any seal or ring that fits in here?
based on the parts list is have, there doesn't seem to be, but can someone please either confirm if that is the case and provide the part number?
Thank you,
-nffn

There is nothing that goes on the inside diameter of the spacer. The clear seal goes on the end of the balance shaft, be sure to get the old one off. The spacer goes in the rubber seal which is then installed in the balance shaft end housing. Oil the inside of the seals thoroughly before installation.

hello,
i'm still finishing up work on my car, but had to come to tell you all thanks for the help. we were able to install the front seals and other miscellaneous and actually start the car. took most of the day to install seals, but some engine systems were opened since almost 4months now, and it went together and started within two attempts.
thanks for the help. i'd like to post a list of what i did when the car is done.

How is an 86 turbo different? I'm going to reseal the front of my engine while I have the timing belt off. If I get all those parts you listed i should be fine?

The only difference between them is the toothed roller for the cam belt. Many have had the stud shear off, so I recommend replacing it while you have it apart.

The woodruff keys are the little wedges that go in the slots on the end of the balance shafts (there is also one on teh camshaft and crankshaft) It is to allow you to place the roller on only one orientation, to keep it from sliding as well as to allow you to use alignment marks on the roller.
