So basically my air conditioning unit is dangling and held on by zip ties because the torsion bar broke, and some of the bolts came off...yeah i dont know why, but i can't find anybody selling one on ebay, on tweeks.com or anywhere for that matter. does anyone know where i could find one for my 85.5 944? or does anyone here have one they could sell to me from a parts car or something? and untill then (i need to take the car up to my college to work on it) i need a belt that will travel from the engine to the alternator, does anyone have the size/part # that i could pick up from an auto parts shop? thanks ~kirk

When I broke the adjuster rod for the alternator, I ended up getting one at the dealer. Took a couple of days to get it, but the cost wasn't too bad. $26 (but that was 4 , maybee 5 years ago...)

oh totally, i dont know why i didn't see that, i check paragon...nice man thanks! Now does anyone know of the correct belt size from the engine to alternator excluding the a/c unit?
Also maybe someone might know, but how long do you think a car will last driving w/o alternator, like how long with the battery power the engine? From my house to my college its an hour long drive, now i've been doing short trips in the 944 like this, but not long and so i'm worried as to the outcome. and would possibly two car batteries work, because i'm droping off my 924S, so i could take that battery with my in the 944, and when the 944 died, i could just switch it out with the 924S battery. haha doable...??? ~kirk

you can use a gates K050330 belt. it is a 5-rib belt, and you have to put it on like a bicycle chain.
put around alternator, and press against crank pulley and walk it on while rotating engine by hand. my AC compressor seized up and i ran my car like this for about 3k miles.
this is one of the many things i am replacing on my car right now![Wink](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif)
i doubt you could make an hour long trip without your alternator, i dont know how long you will last. but i've had cars with a belt break, and would make it maybe 15 miles or so, cars will vary though. not worth the risk

hey very cool part belt by gates, just one question, i checked on their website to see auto part stores that might sell it, and is this K050330 a regularly sold item? or will they most likely not have that specific one? i'm being pessimistic because i am on a time constraint...long story, college, work, lots of stuff haha

i walked into carquest (they use gates belts so their numbers match) and they didnt have one that morning, but was able to get it by 6pm the same day.

ya just picked up the belt, they had one, looks like its been in there for YEARS but thats cool. will the engine actually turn if i am turning the crank pulley? i'll try it, or i may just take out the air filter box and use the adjusting rod, which the alternator should have right? or is the a/c unit the only one that does the adjusting?
oh yeah and quickly would anyone be willing to sell a new/used a/c tensioner, strut, adjustable thingy w/e u wanna call it? i'd rather not spend $60 not including shipping for a new one... thanks

it will turn, but by hand i mean a ratchet and a 24mm deep socket
there is no adjustment on the alternator which is why you have to do it via bicycle method. it goes on tight, but it works.
