Default HELP! My rear view mirror fell off!

Well, it's not that big a deal, but as I was cleaning my inner windshield, I bumped the mirror pretty hard and knocked it right off!! Do I need to go to a glass/window shop and have this done professionally or can I just go buy some strong adhesive and tackle it myself? I don't want a half-assed job and will pay but if I can do a comparable repair job and save $$$, why not?!

Thanx for any help.

Its about a $3 tube of "rearview mirror adhesive" at any autoparts store.

Yeah the glue they sell works great. The instructions are simple, but follow em.

Hint: also buy a pack of razor blades at the auto parts store to get the old excess adhesive off.

Yep, prep is EVERYTHING. Follow the instructions on the label, and you'll be just fine! Rear view mirror adhesive is available at most any decent FLAPS.

Also, be careful to measure where you stick the old tab or the sun visors will hit the mirror when you pull them out.

Don't do it in the sun and let it set overnight. If you are nuts about it like I am, take a grease pencil and mark on the outer part of the windshield an "X" marks the spot by drawing an outline of the old glue BEFORE you scrape it off. This way you know exactly where the replacement goes. Then mount the thing following the instructions. For some reason I can't explain, I always tape the damned thing overnight. Haven't had one fall off, ever, after doing this.

OK STOP IT!! It's too much helpful information!!! LOL Thanx everyone - I'll be sure to mark the spot exactly before I remove the old glue...never thought of that til ^^ now but very good idea.

What would I do without this place?

(Pay too much for routine stuff!)

When i was at a DE waiting on tech a friend/tech inspector reached in to take my EZ Pass off. He knocked the mirror off.

$150 to sign up for the DE
$115 for a hotel room the night before
$50 in gas an tolls
The look on his face when he saw it fall off, and I said "don't worry, it is nothing. we will just share your RS America if they don't pass me".....PRICELESS

The tech inspector said if my instructor was cool, he was cool. During lunch I drove 35 miles to the nearest auto parts store and piced up two kits. Razor schmazor. I just slapped the new one on about an inch below the old one, got some tape from the NAPA guy and held it in place on the ride back. Im not sure if i cleaned the old one yet.

I knows this goes without saying. But, be sure and separate the part that actually adheres to the windshield from the mirror body itself. Then glue the small light weight metal piece onto the windshield. After it's all dry you simply slide the mirror onto the metal piece which is now reglued on the windshield. Make sure you glue the metal piece right side up. It all seems obvious, I know. But, it has something to do with that measure twice cut once philosophy.

The glue does really work well. After repairing the mirror on my truck not too long ago, I hit the mirror a second time, knocking it off all over again. To my surprise a small chunk of glass came with the mirror. So the windshield glass actually failed before the adhesive bond. Needless to say, I didn't have to mark the mirror from the outside with anything to put it back in the right place. I simply fit the chunk of glass back into the divot in the windshield.

Iirc my mirror didn't have the 'sleeve' (small metal piece) that the actual mirror slides into...most cars do but mne is just the mirror stuck right on the windshield (well, the mirrors' arm)....I could be wrong though - will be fixed as soon as I get my sorry *** outta here and fix it!

Thanx all!
