Ok the car was sitting for 3-4 weeks, cold morning - loud squeaking when turning steering wheel, ok check PWS resivoir,= low, very low. Add about 8 oz with seal leak. A week ater the noise returns, resivoir is half empty. No fluid leak around resivior. Its been cold so I havent had a chance to get under the car,my questions,
Whats is most likely to be leaking?RAck,pump, hose line.
How much do these thing cost? Parts, labour?
Thanks,

Proabably the rack. Unless you're up for resealing one yourself, I would look to Zims. I think they have a fair price on a rebuilt (seems like it was 175 + your core). But then you still have install, alignment and maybe some other small parts to go with it. I've heard numbers like 750 for the whole job, may be higher though. Could be I'm wrong though and you just have a hose letting go...Bruce

Leaking could be from any of the above. Mine was leaking from the rack itself and filling the dust boots. Resealing is the cheapest option and the Rennbay kit is great and the customer service is excellent, but only if you have the time and place to do it. I had offers to have mine resealed for me for about $250. But these things can be pretty expesive to ship and because I would be pulling it off the car myself to have it resealed anyway I figured to give the reseal a try. So far it has worked great. If you end up needing to buy lines or other parts, I would try Paragon or 944online or if you want to buy used you might try George Beuselinck at georgeb@944ecology.com. Hopefully its an easy fix.

i am needing to do a reseal to the power steering rack on my 944. it's leaking out the rubber boots. i'm trying to decide to either buy a used one on ebay, or buy the reseal kit. #1 how much work is it to get the rack off of the car and back onto it? then about the reseal kit, i was checking on clarks garage and pelican i believe, but is it really as easy as it seems? what about tools 'n such? how did i t go for you?
i was thinking about this one on ebay. is that everything i would need? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...RK%3AMEWA%3AIT

I had a pretty hard time getting the rack off of my car when it came to pulling the rack from the steering column lower universal joint. I had to drive a chisel into the slot in the lower u joint to get it off the car. This wasn't so bad, but I had the same problem when I went to reinstall the rack, which was a lot harder since I had to support the weight of the rack while trying to force it back onto the car. Below is a link to a good procedure.

Travis sells a great kit at www.Rennbay.com and he was really helpful when I messed some things up along the way. This was the first thing I did on my car beyond changing my oil, so it doesen't take a lot a mechanical ability, just some patience. In all I tooke me about a week working on it off and on. I guess I had about 8 hours in it total.
