Default Track tires for 15x7 wheels???

I tried doing a search on this, and I was not very successful . . .

I have an 86 na with two sets of stock 15x7 wheels. I'm ready to put dedicated track tires on one set. My first thought was Hoosiers, but the Tire Rack won't show anything in the stock size (215/60-15) for Hoosiers.

What are some other options???

Mark

You can run 225/50's on those rims too. You may be abe to buy some of the discontinued S04's for a discount from tirerack or hoosier direct.

Toyo RA-1s (225/50) or my new favorites - Avons Tech R-A (225/45).

I did a track session for the first time on track specific tire, and they were a used set of RA-1s on Cookie Cutters... the car handled GREAT! (well, except for the need for better sway bars, and better shocks, and better springs, but other than that!)

the 225/50 R15 Toyo RA-1 is great tire for the 944. They are the spec tire for 944 spec.

They are not the stickest tires out there, but long lasting and ideal for DE.

I'll also throw in for the Toyos...

Now... if you're up for something that's less sticky (sadly) but much longer lasting, I highly recommend the BFG G-force TA/KD tires in 225/50/ZR15....

That's what I use in the summer

love my 225/50/15 kuhmo victoracers. TOns of autox and a DE on them have lasted me two years. IM going to try some RA1's now but ive seen alot of locals running kuhmos for along time who love them. Cheaper as well. The shorter 50 tires will give you more bottom end for short courses or autoxing.

Did you check if the Azeni RT-615 is available in something that will fit your wheel? They are great, long lasting tires. You really dont need R comps for HPDE especially if your relativly new to the track. You learn much less.
Either way, the Azenis grip very well.

I ran Victoracers before the Toyos. I autocrossed and DE'ed the car and loved them. Then I started racing on them and loved them.

Then 944 spec went to the toyo as a spec tire. I was not happy as they cost just a bit more. Once I drove them I began to love them even more.

The toyo is much more consistant over a run and its life. Its life is double that of the Victoracer. I could burn up victoracers in 5 track days once I started racing hard. This was 20 heat cycles or less My first set of toyo's got me 48 heat cycles. Even shaving the tire to 4/32 gets me 35-40 heat cycles pushing even harder than before.

I will say that I believe Victoracers are a tiny bit faster and also heat up quicker for autocross. For DE however I will never use Victoracers again.

In racing I'd rather use toyo's than Victoraces due to life. The difference in grip is minimal compared to extra toyo life. If I really wanted to to fast when racing I'd look at the latest Hoosier. It WILL be quite a bit faster, but at the expense of being about $50 more per tire and lasting 1 weekend, maybe 2 before it is junk

One of the reasons that I like the new Avons is for the stick, IMO they are better than the Toyos. However, I still do not know how long they will last, I currently have 3 days on them and there is very little wear. From what I've been told, they will last as long as the Toyos. If that is the case then I may run them all the time, if not, I'll go back to Toyos. The more expensive than the Toyos, but not as expensive as the Hoosiers.

I agree with Eyal, if you have little track time to this point, don't bother with the R compounds.

If you have little to no track time then buy a set Yoko ES100's in 225/50 R15.

These are decient cheap tires. Perfect for you first few steps out on the track. Once they burn up you can consider R tires. The BFG KD's are great tires(better than the ES100), but will cost alot more than the ES100's. If you are just learning the difference between ES100 and KD's non existant, except for the price.

If you want grip then good DE tire is RA1. Plenty of grip to be fun and fast, but tough enough to drive on the street and long lasting enough to be acceptable budget wise.

I used 225/45/15 Hoosiers back when I ran 15x7's in ITA. Now I'm running 15x6's, per ITB rules. I'm still running 225/45/15's, though!

Vaughan-

Do you still have your 15x7 cookie cutters or phone dials? I have an extra set of 15x6 cookies that I'd like to trade for 7's or sell. PM me if you're interested.

Cory,
Vaughan's 15x7's would be the late offset type. Those will only work on 87 and 88 944's and the 924S.

I forget which year car you have.

Correct, my 15x7's (phonies) are mostly late-offset, excepting the cookies, but one of those no longer properly resembles the wheel it once was after an encounter with a less-talented Fiero racer...

As for 15x6's, I'm using spiderwebs... but not 100% stuck on them. I'd ideally like Fuchs, not sure if they're available. Are you anywhere near Michigan? I would be willing to trade, since the 7's are of no use to me anymore, but not enough to bother spending on shipping...
