Carfax Report.. a little fishy
So,
I had a carfax check on the 1982 931 I recently purchased and the history showed up as the following:
12/09/1995 6,331 California
Inspection Station
Sacramento, CA
Passed emissions inspection
-----------------------------------
11/11/1997 14,649 California
Inspection Station
Sacramento, CA
Failed emissions inspection
-----------------------------------
11/13/1997 14,688 California
Inspection Station
Sacramento, CA
Passed emissions inspection
-----------------------------------
10/27/1998 22,155 California
Inspection Station
Sacramento, CA
Passed emissions inspection
-----------------------------------
10/24/2000 Vehicle Repair Center
Strawberry Valley, CA
Vehicle serviced
-----------------------------------
10/24/2000 37,704 California
Inspection Station
Strawberry Valley, CA
Passed emissions inspection
What should I make of this? The car has been parked for the last 4 years (apparently five) and it shows 37xxx when I saw it last week. Now did I somehow get lucky and find a 931 with 37k original miles or was the car somewhere else before 1995? The VIN number is WP0AA0936CN150250 . So what is the true history of this car?
Thanks

I realize they reset, but where was the car before 1995? It seems strange that there are no records of the car at all. When I did a Carfax on my 1986 944 it showed records from Canada (originally a canadian car) right to California where I bought it.

Doesn't sound like you got your CARFAX money's worth. Did it register as a 'clean' report, or however they characterize a report with no anomalies? Certainly an 82 that has no record of existence for 13 years would qualify as problematic.

looks to me like you got a 37k mile car. before the early 90s the information uploaded on to the states computers was very sketchy. my RX7 was inspected at the dealer every year from 91 on. it didnt show up on carfax till about 98 or 99. Also, when i moved I changed the address on my registration and it showed as a new owner.
i think you got your moneys worth from carfax. the question is did you get your moneys worth on the car? look for old receipts etc.

I think carfax is a rip personally we used to subscribe to it at my dads car lot, lots of discrepancies, we dropped after about 6 months of incorrect info! It would show cars we had on the lot as being located in texas, salvage titles on cars with clean titles etc. They show my mustang that has been dragraced for the last 3 years as a lease car, go figure

The best way to tell if it's 132K is how does it look? If the interior, pedal covers, and window seals are worn I doubt the car has the original 32K miles. I remember the ad and the owner was pretty up front about work on the car. Why would anyone rebuild a turbo at 32K? I would cConsider it a mid hi-miler. The CarFax would show the early activity unless it was never registered which I doubt. I think CF just isn't that accurate sometimes and some states don't provide that info.

You could try running the vin at a Porsche dealership?...
I know with VW's they can look up the history from pretty much any dealership. You might get lucky and find some milage numbers there.
Like was mentioned above, best way to tell is by looking at the interior. A 32k mile car should look pretty damn good inside

It really doesn't matter what the Carfax report shows. The car has been sitting for 5 years and although the exterior looked pretty good the paint was oxidizing from the years. The interior on the car looked pretty clean for its age (brown and tan), but the interior felt wet so the carpets are probably molding in certian areas.
As far as 32k miles though, I could believe it but then you have to wonder why the owner was trying to rebuild the turbo. I need to speak to the owner again though, because I think he said he bought the car in 1995 so he might be able to shed some light on the car's history.
Here is a the total cost of the car so far:
Carfax = $0.00 (someone did it for me on the pelican forums)
Car = $300
Also I might be able to get the car transported the 400 miles to LA for free with some movers, but I'm not sure when this will happen yet. All in all, the car was a great deal but it's going to take a bit of money to get the car on the road.

You got that car for $300?...nice job my friend. At $500 it was a steal with clean title to boot. Are you planning a full restoration? Jeff must be planting that self applied boot at the moment.
