Default To splash pan or not to splash pan?

Hey guys,

Went to work on my 944 for the first time this morning and was like "Whaa...??
How do I get to anything?

So, removed the splash pan and all was right with the world again, but am wondering what the general consensus is on whether or not to bother with re-installing it?

I guess it would be better to have it on, but it seems like everytime that I want to do any significant work on the car, its going to have to come off.

Any feedback is appreciated, thanks!

Ed

Put it back on. It's much better for the airflow under the car. (and some say helps with the flow through the front airdam to the radiator) Looks to be in pretty good shape too, minus the oil. Most cars don't have them or they are tore up.

Defenetley leave it on, its a rarity almost to find a car that still has one. Besides, its only a few 10mm bolts...though it can be a pain in the butt to line up the sides again.

I am trying to find one for my late style 944, the black plastic ones are impossible to find. And when i do find them they are friggin expensive!

Yeah, those things are a pain. Mine looked just as bad until I cleaned it with a pressure washer and steel wool.

put it back.

reasons to leave it off:
1: makes it easier when you work on the car

reasons to put it back on
1: improves underbody airflow (reduces drag and increases mpg)
2: protects underbody from forgein object damage
3: helps to keep the underbody a little bit cleaner

lets not forget that it will keep your alternator safe from water. They call it a splash pan/gaurd for a reason! in fact i'm still pissed about my brand spankin new alternator dieing because of a carwash since it didn't have that one amazing piece of metal.

You can use some Purple Power or whatever that stuff is called. It will take all the grease off of there very very easily.

I still have mine on the car but I did cut off the two 'ears' to make room for front rotor cooling ducts. The pan still does the job but is easier to remove and reinstall without the two upright 'ears'. If you decide to trim them off, leave a quarter inch or so past the bend and then fold this over to produce a more rigid edge.

Ok, thanks guys. I'll throw it back on there. And you're right, its not a big deal to take it on or off now that I know how to deal with it.

And the grease, no problem, a little Simple Green or something like that and a little elbow grease, and it'll be as good as new. Thanks. -Ed

Not sure if you knew this, but it isn't the same as the one for our cars. Ours is different.

mine was plastic, and in bad shape when i got the car... after owning it for about 2 weeks, it broke while going down the road and the front was dragging against the ground... sounded like something serious broke.. so its sitting in the garage now

I just assumed the big plastic piece under my car was the "underbody" piece everyone always refers to as being missing.
