Just out of curiousity, how often do you guys actually change your fuel filter? I put a new one in 2 years ago (12,000 miles ago). The most aggressive change interval I've seen recommended is every 2 years. The maintenance schedules for our car that I've seen don't even mention it. In practice, how often do you guys install a new one?

Missed my choice:
Right after I got the car as the PO obviously did zero maintenance. Then every 3 years or when the FI system doesn't act right.

Hey all,
I change my fuel filter every other oil change (about 12-15k miles), though sometimes I leave it a few weeks after the oil change because its such a PITA to get the rusted up strap off of the old one
Cheers

When I got my car, the fuel filter said "Made in W. Germany" on the side... for sh*ts and grins, when I had it off, I blew through it, (without putting my lips on it...ew...) and black sludge came out...
better yet, I had a buddy, who's fuel filter LITERALLY had black jello in it. it was disgusting. that car was also a 1987 car... changed fuel filter a couple months back...

Thanks, guys. Just wanted to make sure that I wasn't being a bad father by waiting a few more months. I too changed mine first thing when I bought the car. The old one looked like it had been on there for a while and I couldn't remember the records indicating that it had been changed within the past 40k miles. Fortunately, the PO used techron pretty religiously every few k (it's actually in the records), so the whole FI system has been pretty trouble free.

Do you ever change the fuel pump when changing the filter?
I have heard that every 100 000 miles and also never change it unless it fails you. Someone mentioned a high flow fuel pump. Thoughts.
Im new to all this.

I used to do a lot of preventative maintenance, but I got bit too many times by the infant mortality failure curve. I'm now more of a waiting for it to fail kind of guy.
[Note that I would change the -filter- every 60K or so.]
