Default Power Steering Fluid (ATF)

I wish to flush out and replace the power steering fluid, since it looks old yet clean.

The manual calls for ATF Dextron fluid to be used, but it doesn't say if it is Dextron 1, 2 or 3. Does it matter? i have access to ATF Dextron 2, should this be any problem?

I feel like I've read somewhere that it has to be dextron III mercon, and that's what I have waiting in the garage to do the same job. I can't remember where I read that though, but I think it was in the workshop manuals.

Don't know if it matters which to use, or if Dexron II would be ok, but my owners manual specifically states Dexron III.

Just took another look at the owners manual, it indicates ATF Dextron but doesn't say which one.

Shall i just use dextron 3??

I used three when I just replaced my pump and flushed the reservoir.

I think i would go for Detxtron 2

Correct me if i am mistaken, but D2 was/is used on older cars, where D3 is used on newer models?

What is the best way to drian the fluid from the system? from the p/s pump?

As soon as you take the hoses off the pump the fluid goes everywhere...then take the hoses off the bottom of the reservoir and more fluid goes everywhere...it's a messy job. I used simple green to clean everything very thoroughly, and I made sure to clean the swaybar bushings really well. Good luck,
Steve

this is what we do. we crack one of the unions on the power steering rack just a little and then start the car(remember i said only a little) as the fluid is draining i top it up at the bottle until it looks clean, usually takes a few litres to flush
