You are going to hate me but if you are paying someone you are going to end up paying more than most 944s are worth.

Without taking it to a line level you are easily looking at 2500-3000K dollars.

Replace the rod bearings while you have the pan off. LOTS of labor to get to the $50 set of bearings. The rod bearing nuts get replaced as part of the process.

If you're tracking the car much (DE or intend to race it), you'll want to have the pan modified. Most P-car shops have a method for baffling the pan and installing a catching mechanism around the pick-up. I do not have a pic of mine, but it's a pretty common mod on tracked/raced 944 series cars.

As noted above, this will cost a few bucks, I'm sorry to say. Been there/done most of that... a few times now

DIY:
Parts - about $1,000 if you buy everything new (the most expensive being the manual rack at about $700 or so)
Labor - nothin'. Gonna' take probably days if not weeks if you're new to 944s though.

Shop:
Parts - Probably about the same $1,000 or so
Labor - Bend over.

That sounds cheap. Heck if I could find a place to do it for $800, I'd probably take it there just so I could get a warranty. I figure it's more in the couple-of-grand range. . .

the last time i took my car in it was 800 for a oil pan gasket and like 1200 for all new head parts, headgasket, rod bearings, belts, new piston rings so the total was around 2k. I would that isn't bad but i find my car later on down the road with a bad piston ring and leaking oil

They probably either put the old rings back in, never bothered changing them or used "used" parts and charged you for new ones. Not an uncommon practice I'm afraid - happened to my wife a few years back.

Lets see how close I can come:
Oil pan gasket - $75 (I havent bought one in some time but I think I paid about this much for it)
Bearings - $60
Labor - 11 hours (IIRC) @ 100/hr roughly = $1100
Total = $1235

Manual Rack - $200 (you can get them for more or less)
Tie Rods - $250 (new from Porsche, these are a motorsport part)
Labor - 4 hours @ 100/hr = $400
Alignment - 3 hours @100/hr = $300 (price will vary wildly but the book time is between 3-4 hours including ride height)
Total $1150

Balance shaft reseal
Never paid for it or looked up the labor for it. Probably 5-6 hours of labor plus parts.

It is easily a $3000 job if you are paying someone and I didnt include the while you are in there items. You would probably want to do some of the bushings, nevermind things that actually needed replacement.

I dont like to be the guy to say this but if you cannot wrench on your own, then you better be independently wealthy or you purchased the wrong car. The things that nickel and dime you to death on a Ford or Chevrolet will hundred and thousand you to death on a 951.

dont forget the motor mounts. while you have them out of the way to get to the oil pan gasket, and repeating above, the rod bearings.

of course if the head is off, and you have the pistons in your hand you may as well do rings for another 600 in parts plus 150 labor. since the head is off, you may as well change the water pump. that was my story a few years back.

to get to the counter balance shaft gasket do the belts come off? if so, add a water pump, and maybe rollers depending on age. the parts on our cars are cheap compared to the labor.
