Default How does a modded 951 compare to a 996?

My girlfriend does not like my 928s4 and kinda has her eye on a modded 951. She was wondering if the speed is comparable to omy 2000 996. I have not driven a 944 turbo in years.

BTW anyone have a modded 951 in the chicagoland area that I could drive?

Thanks!

Ray

If it's a well-built modded 951, it should easily hang with a 996 - especially in the curves.

How modded is modded? There are a few cars owned by people on this board (951s) that would eat a 996 for lunch and still have room for dessert.

I've gone on a few drives with (mostly) 911 guys and I'm constantly surprised at how many "I love the 951, it's so underrated" comments I get. Way more than the (expected) "what's that VW doin' here?" comments. If I do get the latter, they're typically joking. It seems the 951 does have a certain amount of respect within the 911 crowd - I suspect a lot of current 911 guys started off with a 951 or a straight 944. I know eventually I'll get a 911 and it'll be directly due to the many fine times I've had in my "lil' old 4-banger".

I was surprised on one drive in particular where I actually kept pace reasonably well with a GT-2. Until we got to the straightaway.

i'm pretty sure that a 951 with ~300 hp can keep up with a 996. of course, you'd want to put more money into suspension mods, sticking is where these cars run circles around the competition.

that reminds me, i need to get coilovers.

anyone want to contribute to my christmas fund?

Well,
I am and always have been a big fan of the 944/951. Growing up I owned to 944's. I always wanted to own a 951 and it would ne nice if it was on the same power level that I am now used too. Heck more would be better!

Club411, I recently ended my '02 911 lease and bought an '88 944 Turbo S. I loved the 996 but wanted the experience of another model for my next P-car. I always dug the looks of the 951 and knew of their prowess on the race track from my high school days. I have to say I'm very pleased with my choice. The performance mods on my new car are: fully adjustable Bilstein coilovers, Big Red brakes as per the 993 Turbo, 3" open Fabspeed Exhaust, an Autothority chip, and a billett aluminum diverter valve. That's it, aside from 18" wheels and some other non-performance stuff....The 996 was easy to drive, and covered my rookie mistakes with all the electronic wizardry. As you know, it has amazing off the line power and incredible corner handling. Thinking back, it never really mattered what was approaching as I would merge onto the freeway etc. On the other hand, the 944 T/S has taken some getting use to. It clearly requires my full attention at all times. That's partly related to the cup suspension and Pirelli Corsas, but also just the nature of a turbo I suppose. However, now that I've driven and gotten used to the car I love it. It's clearly not as fast off the line as the 996, but once I'm around 3K RPMs and it spools up it is blistering fast, every bit as quick as the 996. And, as far as handling, hands down the 944 as it's set up would easily spank the stock 996 in the twistys. I know these things can be modded to boost earlier and make way more horsepower, but I don't need it, at least right now. It's plenty of car for me, and I believe it's advanced me as a driver. In a nutshell, the stock 996 was a really fast, sporty, and comfortable street car, the 944 T/S as mine is set up feels and performs more like a street legal race car. I hope this helps.

Whether faster or not, the 996 will still be a better and more modern car. Mods vary extensively as there are several 500hp 951s on this board.

I have worked on/driven every na production 911 ever built.
One thing I didn't expect was the top end of the 997 carrera S - very strong at high end.
The 996 is similar, but not as fast.
I believe you will need a little more HP (than him) to get by a 996, because of the powerband.
I would say you would need chips, mild exhaust work, more boost and maybe even an MAF sensor to pass a 996.

The 951 is nice to mod, because it is really not that valuable - and you can get 500 HP easily out of it now. Then you can pass 997 S cars so fast that they really won't have time to read your license plate - like I did.

The 997 Carrera S puts 306 RWHP.
The 996 GT3 is 341 RWHP
996 280-290 RWHP

These are very fast cars if you have just traded in your Audi A6

If I wanted a p-car for a daily, I'd go for a 996. The 951 demands a little more attention for upkeep. I'd think a 996 would be reasonably reliable, and like Serge says, much more modern.

But, if you like to tinker, the 951 can have it's rewards.
