How does a modded 951 compare to a 996?

Karl2bdc said it best.
You can argue all you want but in the end its just an old car. It was incredible for it's time and still is very fun to drive, but comparing it to modern cars is like screwing for virginity.

And i apologize to those i pissed off in this thread, i should know better, it was not my intention. The 951 is the greatest sports car ever made or that ever will be made for the money. I guess I was living in my own little reality. But I bust my *** to make the money I do, and I will make damn sure I don’t die with a lump sum sitting in my bank account…and believe it or not, I’m one frugal SOB.

Lets see, the only thing I can add to this thread is...
Im 17 years old, and I have a two 944s. One being a 951. There is no other car that would be a. as fast or b. as good looking as a 951 for the price range I was looking in. I saved up my money from as early as I can remember to be able to afford a car when I got my liscence. Im proud of the fact that my 20 year old porsche can hang with most of the new cars out there, and for alot less. What other car for 10k + 10k in mods can turn as many heads and be as quick as a brand new porsche/corvette/ect. ?? Theres no substitute for my turbo, mark my words.

I recently drove my partner's '05 996 (AWD, convertible, C4 I think? I don't know the models that well.) I was afraid that I wouldn't like my '89 951 as much as I do after driving his, which he bought new. To be honest, I don't have the $100K+ to spend on a car anyway, BUT...
For a car that cost 10X more than mine, the difference was minimal to me. Yes his is a more modern, cushier and smoother ride, has a warranty, and the convertible top would be great. Other than that, speed and handling are pretty comparable for street driving considering the price difference. It made me like my car even more, and very happy about my decision. After driving it, I told him "that's a fun car." He reluctantly replied "it's the same as yours."
Would I rather drive his? Obviously. I wouldn't spend the extra money though, and after seeing what I paid for mine (12K), I'm pretty sure he thinks I made the smarter buy.

For perspective, an 88TS or 89T window sticker was $44-47k, which was more than an
88-89 3.2 911 Carrera at the time. The difference in the current price of a
16 to 19 year old 944T versus a 1-6 year old 996 has more to do with
depreciation and inflation, than with economy of design. And my guess is that in 1989, a guy with a chipped 86 944T and some koni sport yellows, looked at the 89T on the showroom floor and thought that new car was not worth $20k more than his 3-4 year old car.
Im sure someone can check the inflation and exchange rates over the past 20 years, but my guess is that the current 997 base price is probably close in today's dollar, to a 944 Turbo (S) in 1989.
But even so, my arguable impression is that in 1989, a 944 Turbo sat on a higher rung
of the performance car ladder than a 996/7 does today. Very few cars sold in
the US were able to run with a 944 Turbo in ‘89, and of the handful that
might be capable, two were other Porsches, the 911 Turbo, and the 928S4.
Today, I don’t see that Porsche has maintained as much performance
separation/superiority between its cars and the competition.
I dont disagree that other cars can be bought today and upgraded to match or surpass the performance of any porsche, whether its an MR2, RX7, Supra, Corvette, Viper, 300/350ZX, etc. And often it can be done for cheaper. Yes, a 944T is realitively cheap for the performance, but in reality $10-14k for a 16 year old car with 75-100k miles is not that cheap to purchase, and they are not cheap to maintain. You pay for the Porsche name on the hood badge regardless of
if you buy a $400k C-GT from a dealer, or buy $200 worth of maintenance parts for
the 19 year old car. But what you get is some exclusivity and the history of the name - and I will also argue that a Porsche will turn more heads (in most crowds) than a Toyota, Mazda, or Nissan.
Sorry for dragging off-topic.
