I got a filter from a newer car and just safety wired it over the inlets. That thing gets dirty REALLY FAST. But I no longer get little pieces of road crap in my face when driving.

I used some scraps of washable HVAC filter media and saftey wired them to the heater fan intakes. Much nicer not to have bits of leaves tossed in your face from the vents and less dusty in the car too. This was on my old hardtop, I have not bothered doing this on the cabrio which is garaged and gets dusty due to top-down driving.

On my 87 951 I installed 2 KLA filters on both sides of the blower motor and was super cool is KLA will even give you the instruction to do so and you don't have to buy there product, but you do have to click the Hyper link about 2 post from the top then click "Instilation Notes".
and Boom you got pictures and instructions

I got some of this stuff and just cut it to size and fit it in front of my blower motor's grill. Mind you I have a 924S so it didn't come with an air filter housing but it worked quite well and I didn't even have to secure it using anything. Just wedged in there fine and because its washable, any water or whatever that ran off the windshield and onto it didn't cause it to crumble away like paper filters would.
I got a much smaller piece than what is in that link. It was available at my local Rona for like $10 or something.

If you have an 85.5 and up you can just buy the retrofit kit P#94457290500.
It's about $120 from the dealer and comes with everything you need to install the factory dust filters.
