'Track bad, wax good'

I still believe in this, which is why I'm buying a car to track at PCA DE and autox events. My car is too nice to track, so Raj (968TurboS) and I are going in on a 951. Watch out NNJR autox and DE events, there's going to be a new sheriff in town. Actually, I'll be asking you all for advice!

I agree, however not so much because of the "my car is too nice to track" aspect.
I think that you either can have a comfy street car, or a serious track car. You cannot comfortably drive to work in a car that will be seriously competitive in any racing series. I'm not talking about DE's here folks.
This is why my 951 will eventually become a full on race car when it becomes too harsh for street driving, (and once I get my racing licence) and I will later get a 968 or heaven forbid a 911, to use as a comfy street car.
For DE however, I don't think you need to go all out and get a track car. Unless you are having multiple "blonde moments" and confuse your Porsche with a lawn mower, you shouldn't worry about damaging your car at a DE. Now - I have friends who have left car Bra's on only to have them come loose and then damage the paint on the hood... and another friend who picked up some nasty rock chips after the mongoloid in front went into the gravel... but that is what racer's tape is for!!!

My 968 isn't a daily driver, but the chances of dinging it, banging it, and tearing it up on the track ain't worth it-I kinda think I've got the best of both worlds going here.

I am floored!
THUD
picking myself off the floor again...
Once you track, you NEVER go back!
Looking forward to seeing you and Raj out there, on the track where our cars live and breathe!

Track cars are good. Very good.
I built my 944 years ago not wanting to sand blast my 951S doing DE's.
It is amazing how much more I enjoyed DE when not needing to worry about rock chips paint damage and all the other "what ifs" that could happen even in a DE.
It was one of the best decisions I ever made.

Damian - i didn't realise your car is a garage queen. if that's the case, and you can afford it... a track dedicated 951 is a good idea and will be much less stressfull for you.

A friend of mine was looking at this car as well. I don't remember the specs or my opinion on it - I'll sort through my email tomorrow at work and post what I wrote. Based on the car description, I had some questions regarding the condition of the car, IIRC.

Z, we checked it pretty carefully, Raj first looked at it, we had a huge pile of receipts for head work, suspension, etc to review, it as a later Turbo S turbo, a 50K mile Turbo S tranny with lsd from 944Ecology put it, Sparco seats, Redline Roll bar, adjustable coilovers with camber plates, test pipe, vented nose. We drove up together last Friday and drove the car separately.
The things we don't like are the heavy Cup 1 replica wheels, the early offset hubs, a exhaust hanger is flopping, but the car was originally a CA car, no rust, underneath is very clean (we had them put the car on the lift). The seats do adjust fore and aft, and we both fit in it ok. Minor oil pan leaks but that's about it.

So it's a '86 with upgrades. Yeah, the early hubs and lack of ABS is something you have to consider when looking at the '86 951's. But seems most 951's for sale these days are from '86.
Unfortunately, I deleted my comments to my friend about that car. I too, don't like the big, heavy 17" wheels - hopefully the A-arms are in good shape...
Truthfully, I think it's almost too much of a car to start out with - the upgraded suspenion will hide many of your mistakes, as will the turbocharged power.
What you really should do is use my 944S2 for DE's. I'll gladly swap cars with you!
Good luck!
-Z.
PS: Lime Rock I is in April... tentative date: April 14-15. Never to early to plan!
