Default Car shaking around 60mph

83 944 w/ manual rack. At about 60mph the steering wheel shakes and vibrates (wheel shimmy) pretty bad.. WHat are the probable causes of this? What should I check.

Also it does the same thing while braking. I have brand new rotors and I doubt they could be warped.

Wheel out of balance would be my first thought......the cheapest fix too. I am guessing this from the fact that the shake doesn't happen until 60ish. Might have thrown a weight somewhere.......

yeah, I'd say out of balance, or a bad wheel bearing... jack up the front of the car, grab the top and bottom of the wheel, and rock it back and forth... if there's a lot of play, adjust wheel bearings.

The 1983 944 has no ABS braking. This means numerous flat spots exist on your pre-1987 944, because even ONE panic stop will take your tires out-of-the-round, my friend. Make sure there is no oddball mix/match brand tires too.

Bad Camber/Caster settings is another possibility. Looking from above the car- one wheel may be slightly forward of the other, and not evenly parallel. Bent struts and overlooked fender-bender repairs can give your car a world of unpleasant ride issues. Does the shimmy feel like an oscillation transmitted throught the steering wheel? Again- bent control arms, balljoints and tie rods factor another variable to the troubleshooting effort. Even tired front shox sloshing inside stiff springs will give a nasty THUD! jarring your senses when going over potholes, speedbumps, or finished construction, known as Uneven Pavement Surface, with a fresh asphalt pebble blasting.

Check the control arm bushings and the ball joints. BTDT.

My steering wheel shakes pretty bad, balancing them didn't help either. I think it's my bushings and ball joints...I'll get to that eventually.

Mine does that around 75-80. For my car I know it's a bad wheel bearing, which I hope to be changing out tomorrow.

Mine will do that around 60, at 70 it goes away. Solution: drive 70.

Normal ****!
Starts about 95km/h, ends at 110km/hr.
I am led to believe that this is an inherrant trait of our old n/a's.
I had alignments, balances, and new tyres and shocks and steering joints done. Still there!
Drive under or over the problem speed and it's not a problem!

I have the same issue, and I think its from my front right wheel bearing.
