Worst example of Porsche engineering stupidity on 944s?

Clutch and replacing the torsion bars both require dropping the rear transaxle. Definately top of my list of yuck things on a 944.
I wouldn't say the 944 was engineered bad, I'd say it was over-engineered!

The interference fit is the worst idea that comes to mind but many others do as well. Most have been stated above. I have one more though.
Dry electrical connectors. How bout some F*&^'n grease in there to control corrosion fool!
Definetly a pet-peave of mine.

With all these nasty issues it's a wonder why anyone would want to keep one. But I love them anyway. Evolution is definately a key word, as the 944 got better as time went on. I hate how I can never remove my Porsche crest because the early 944 nose panel is welded on. The snap ring is only a problem if you use the wrong rubber gasket on the thermostat (like I did once). I voted for interference, because to me the only other real PITA on the list is the clutch, and it really isn't that bad after you've dont it a couple times. Plus, it's nice to be able to change the rear main seal and change the shift bushings on the tranny while it's out.

I have to go with "Other" on this one... While the clutch, cheesehead bolts, sun-roof mechanisms and speedo gears are definitely up there, IMHO I think one of the worst "design flaws" has to be the battery and fusebox compartments. Porsche's design for water run-off management by directing to these locations from the windshield and sun-roof drains is ridiculous. This design begs for blocked drain passages and corrosion. Not a hard issue to prevent with constant monitoring, but a serious flaw none-the-less.

The rear seat design was actually intended to qualify the vehicle as a 2+2 coupe rather than a 2 seat sport car which helped to lower the cost to insure it. They are not by any stretch of the imagination the only company to do this. Besides, with the seat folded down (or removed) I can carry more in the Porsche than I can in my Civic and almost as much as our Golf.

Clutch has to go where it is. Or do you want the tranny up front, with a crappier weight dist? Add in the turbo exhaust, and there isnt that much to be done about it.
Angle can be better than ft/lbs. Theres a few threads about it.
Belts... All aluminum engine causes that. Chains dont like to be stretched, last I checked. They could have done better yes, with a better tensioner system.
Thermostat ring is overkill, so thats vote worthy.
Back seats... Girls are typically smaller. I know several girls who are quite comfy back there, and they commented about the convertable feel of the wind with the sunroof off. And cheaper insurance. And besides, with big back seats it promptly turns into "Hey, everyone pile into the Porsche for an outing!!!". With 944 back seats, its "Hey, lets use someone ELSES car for an outing, since theres four normally sized people!!" Winner, the 944 owner, few males want to ride back there, lots of girls fit.
951 turbo location is a good spot really, for long term reliability. 924 Turbos eat their own turbochargers pretty quick.
My votes go to the clutch hydraulics system (monster to bleed easily/quickly), the headlight wiring, and the performance detuning of the 944 Turbo to be nice to silly 911s. Oh and the dist. cap. That things a POS.

My vote is for the clutch. Not because of it's location, but the fact that somebody thought that rubber would be a good thing to make it out of.

I can live with everthing except:
The fact that changing the oil pan gasket requires lifting the engine, dropping the crossover, and removing the horrid crossover pipe.
And the clutch, but I think I'll just reach for the credit card for both these things!

I vote for the dashboard construction. Seriously, we've known about this happening, can't we develope a material that although gives us testicular cancer, WILL LAST FOREVER! Honestly, why can't the late dash have been engineered to fit in the place of the early one. Then 924/944 owners everywhere would have one more project to perform.
