Do you have the mahle 75, or 42? here's the thread. supposedly there is a hard to find one with teh check valve, but the other does not. I'm not sure how critical it is though? I guess there would be loss of oil pressure until car runs for a couple seconds?

It's extremely cost prohibitive to install an aftermarket suspension because of the torsion bar rear end, and it drives me crazy. Shops want $600 to re-index the factory setup

Well, that's one answer.....

I agree with that. God help the non-mechanic who has to pay 10+ hours of book time to fix it.

I actually think that the drivetrain and its layout is pure genius. Ok, maybe not the rubber clutch, but on the whole, the system works.
My peeve (and I haven't even done it yet) is the timing belt. A $30 part that needs constant replacement needs a $700 tool. I guess it's more a DIY'ers peeve than for the guys who use their plastic, but still...

Perhaps on the list of out right oversights:
no replacement / inspection maintenance period for the S2's cam chain tensioner and pads, and while we're at it, no part number for just the pads (specifically the bottom one).
I suspect that the 944S with the 2.5L 16 valve engine would have a similar complaint.
