If you are wanting to go road racing, what classes are you considering? Both the 911 and 951 are pretty much only going to have a place to race in PCA, although the 951 has a place in 944 Supercup. But considering 944 Supercup is an east coast thing, that would be a long way to trailer. Are you looking at PCA or are you not sure where you want to race?

For the money you want to spend, I think your absolute best bet is Spec 944.

i know a ton of people in the PCA that either started out racing in 944's or have a 911 to race and want to get a 944 cuz they are cheaper to repair. I would def start out w/ a 944 or 951 for the money. Find a sound car that needs cosmetic help and spend the money on seals/belts/ bushings etc.

A well maintained, documented 951 can be foundfor less than $8k. Like with all Porsches, history is the key. If the belts, water pump and other common concerns have been taken care of, you shouldn't have to put much into it. It will have a higher preventative maintenace cost though.

Also, consider that minor upgrades are reasonably inexpensive. 960 M030 swaybars are ~$500, etc.

But it will cost considerably more than $2k to make it a race car.

I didn't get the impression he wanted a race car. He wants car for track duty which, to me, seems to mean he's not jumping right into coil-overs and rollcages.

you can get a for 9k to 12k a fully race ready, class winning 944 spec race car. Southern Cal has great race program for the 944 NA. It runs in NASA as 944 spec and in POC under GSR.

As for speed. Well they lack hp, but are still wicked fast. My prepared race car is faster than my stock 944 turbo inspite of giving up 100 hp at the wheels. Last time out with POC a 944 spec car turn a lap faster that 95 of some 100+ cars there. That included lots of faster cars.

Plus there is great support group of racers around. They are all willing to help. Racing is tough and hard on the track, but they will spend hrs working you in the pits to make sure you make the show. Even if you just do DE type stuff these guys are willing to help.

If you a race preppred and sorted car they are pretty reliable. You do need to remember they are old cars however. Usally however if something breaks if you replace it properly that is the LAST time that part will break. As plus a number of the cars are still street legal if you are into that sort of thing.

944 spec is the cheapest way to get into Porsche racing. For more details see http://944spec.com

If you want speed then consider this..

The guys in GT3 forum talk about laps time at willow sprigns in GT3 street car. They figure if you can turn under 1:40 you are doing well.

Track record for a 944-spec at willow is 1:37.9 with most cars running 1:398 to 1:39 in the cooler season. Also a 944 spec driver decided to sell his car and move up. Well to move-up he had to get a GT3...

Yes it will. Figure at least 6-7k to make it into a solid race car.
That is a car WITHOUT coilovers and a really expensive suspension.

Oh, well he said he wanted to go roadracing so if figured he meant racing. DE is something else.

You guys are great! Thanks for all the input.

So at this point I've pretty much ruled out a 911SC based on my budget, now I just have to decide on what 944 is best.

George, the 944 spec series looks great, but I'd really like a more powerful car. My goal is just thrills/fun. Will it be hard for me to find races (short or 12 hour type) with a S2 or 951? Do I need a full rollcage, coilovers, etc. for these types of events???? DEs sound great, but it would be fun to compete (I guess I've watched "Le mans" too many times

Eyal, thanks for your offer - I'd love to check out your car. My email address is jmarch68@yahoo.com.

Serge, thanks for the complements on my E30 M3. Here's a link to pics if anyone is interested:

Serge, I'm guessing that's a 87 325is (the earlier cardinal cars had grey carpet). You can drive that car 500K if it's properly maintained.

Ding Ding Ding. Grey carpet, blue carpet at the rear speakers, tan headliner. Yup BMW designers smoke some good stuff.

Well,
Go to a POC Event and get a ride along with spec car driver.

While low on hp these cars are still rather fast.

For ANY form of racing you will need a full rollcage. As to coilovers, they depend on the racing class and how competitive you want to be. To have strongly competitive 951 or 944S2 will take more money that a 944 spec car will. Even then the speeds are not much faster. At my local track a well drive spec car is 1-2 per lap slower than PCA stock class 951 or 944S2. The 951 or 944S2 cost 50% to 100% more to build and run than the spec car.

Oh... if you intend to go cheap on the S2 or 951 race prep then the spec car will probably be faster.
