Default Custom 1st & 2nd gearset.

Who would like to have a much stronger transaxle?.......we all would........Those of us who are pushing 350-500 hp level need something a little stronger. Most of you know that 1st and 2nd gear are cut into the input shaft and consequently have a small diameter. A small diameter means that the tooth root will be narrower than that of a larger diameter gear. This makes the tooth weaker. These teeth will strip when pushed to hard.

As it happens I was talking with a well known transmission/custom gear ratio stockest today.

I am trying to get some pricing, 5-10 piece run, on a custom taller 1st and 2nd gear for the 951 transaxle. There could be a couple of options.

1. Taller 1st & 2nd in a straight cut tooth (Not helical)
A straight cut tooth is stronger than a helical, given the same base diameter, and cheaper to manufacture....and sounds cool too!!!

2. Taller 1st & 2nd in a helical cut tooth (More expensive than #1 but quiter.

Both of these can be had with custom 3rd, 4th & 5th gears, straight or helical.

I am waiting on some pricing that I will share with everyone when the time comes....
I need to know who would be interested in a custom 1st & 2nd gear input shaft.

Stock ratios
3.500
2.059
1.400
1.034
0.829

Possible ratios
2.50
1.71
1.28
.97
.68

I'd say that basicly, stock gearing, you run out of gear before it makes much power. Taller grearing will add more stress to the R&P. Just a thought. Either way, keep us posted. I have evil plans on power, I'll probably be in the same boat not too far off from now.

If you're changing the gear ratio's that much, wouldn't you also want to change the R&P?

Straight cut would be fine for 1st & 2nd IMHO, although 3rd, 4th & 5th would have to be helical cut for any street car.

Actually, thinking on how a gearbox works...won't the whine from a straight cut 1st or 2nd be heard in any gear since all 5 gears are spinning all the time (the exception being reverse)?

ive never heard of ppl breaking the first and second gears....

like andy said. taller gears will let you get all the umph you can out of the car...and be more stressful on the R&P

I have broken them, and I am not alone........

Sort of OT.....My Vw Scirocco, during it racing life, has ripped the teeth off no less than 4 020 transmission input shafts. The VW 020 has 1st and 2nd on the input shaft, same as the 944 box.

I have had a set of custom 1st & 2nd straight cut gears in it for 5 years now....It also served as a drag box in my friends turbo jetta, 375 WHP. It survived 8" slicks and 6000 RPM launches....

This post is to gather data on interest.......

I want the R+P to stay the same...
The idea of taller 1st & 2nd gears, and the rest, is to make use of a 400+ HP engine...just look at the LS7 based vette, it can do 60 in first gear.....

Straight cut would be fine for all the gears...if you don't mind the race car like whine

My current VW box has straight cut teeth on 1st & 2nd...once you shift into 3rd the whine is gone...You can hear the backlash when the car lopes around at idle.

I'm racking my brain on how to get more torque out of my engine. There have been a number of threads here that have pointed in a number of dictions. Of course, I know, that the transaxle would need to be built up to handle it. So there you have it.

Overboost: have you done anything to the TDI yet? The PD engine is highly upgradeable....
