Geoff, I bought a house before I bought my 1st Porsche and it is very important to get that property. But your Dad's car is in great shape and being lightly modified should still be very reliable. I say sell your 924S and put that towards your Dad's car. Then you are looking at a car payment that is appropriate for someone just graduating from college. Besides we both have the track bug. You do a great job with your 924S, but I know you'd rather be out there with the 951S.
BTW, did you make it out to 2nd Creek for the free runs this week?

whoah whoah whoah, everyone, when did Real estate become an option? and when did selling the 924S become an option? it should be, but if I get the job I'm looking at upon graduation, I'll start at $45K a year, which overall, isn't too shabby... I'll be able to afford a nice apartment or house (preferably something with a garage), and a $10K car... and I'm definately NOT selling the 924S. it'll either be DD duty like it is now, or 944spec car racer. the spec car duty if it goes into that, will be shared by my Dad, so the costs of that will be decreased, espescially because I already have the suspension... I'll just be rebuilding the engine, and putting new sway bar bushings in there. Also, this will be IF AND ONLY IF Dad decides he's going to purchase a Cayman S. he already knows he wants one, but hasn't committed to the cost yet. Also, the Turbo S would be MUCH cheaper than the MINI cooper S I've had my eye on, so IMHO, it'd be a better deal.
And sadly, no, I wasn't able to make it out to 2nd creek... RIP 2nd Creek

Getting a good car after college is a good idea, sure. Getting a 951, which will be expensively modded and eat money for repairs, tires, etc. like there's no tomorrow might not be.
If you dad wants to sell the Turbo S that can be an opportunity for you to make money, or an opportunity for you to be poor but happy for a few years. If you dad wants to help you afford the Turbo S he'd probably be more willing to help you get into your own place instead.
If you are paying $400 a month on the car, charge $4000 in mods to a credit card (and pay $100 a month on that) and putting $200 a month into repairs and maintenance. With that kind of money and a decent job, all you need is a little down payment help and you could have a nice condo or a modest house straight out of college, and maybe even before the rates go back up.
Whatever you do, don't pay rent. Once you buy a place, owning cars and stuff like that is a lot easier. Get a house or condo first before the fun car and you'll be rich.
I'd rather have a 924S parked in the garage of my modest house than a nice Turbo S getting weathered and vandalized in the parking lot of my crappy apartment, but that's just me.

If he graduates and gets his 45k a year job being single he can get a small house and go from there. It is pretty safe thing to do even with the 951. If you have a 944 Turbo and 944 spec car then all the mod money goes to the spec car. I have not modded my 951 since I have had it. That has been 8 years now.
Really... the 951 can be nice daily car if you don't get crazy with it. It sounds like it is nice and well taken care of now. Seems like a great idea. As for the house... well 10k won't make much of a down payment. Even so you can buy one for maybe $1000 down and just pay interest like everyone else.
Plus 10k... well that is hardly "fun car" money. 10k is econobox money anyway. So as long as Geoff does not go putting a huge turbo on the car it should hold up just fine.
