Default engine knock

I have a 1987 944na, and it has an engine knock/tapping sound. It runs and drives, but makes a noise. Plugs are fine. Cap and rotor are fine. Seems to have a stuck valve, or something else. At 1000-13000 RPM and at high RPM it makes the noise, but at 1500-2000 RPM it sounds fine. What do you think the problem is?

Thanks

Stuck lifter? It doesn't have a chain tensioner so it wouldn't be that...

Is a stuck lifter an easy problem to fix?

Thanks

A stuck lifter should have a "tapping" sound, and you should be able to isolate it to the cam tower.

Pull the belt cover and check the tension of the belts. Any belt slap (against the covers) should show as wear spots. As far as potential problems go, this is a good one to eliminate....

Do you have enough oil in the engine?

That's right! The belt on my car was slapping the cover near the distributor after letting the car sit (started it up every weekend and drove around the block) for a semester in college. It was a loose belt.

Oil level is fine. Radiator fluid is fine. Is the belt cover behind the cap/rotor on the front side of the valve cover?

My car made a tapping type sound exactly like a stuck lifter, and it ended up being a cracked timing belt roller. Just something to consider.

The belt cover is the black plastic piece on the front of the engine. To get a good look, you need to completely take it off. You will have to take the power steering, and a/c belts off to get to it. You can just take the top half off to look at the belt.

Drain the oil immediately unless you can find another obvious reason for the sound. If there is debris in the oil (magnetic drain plug), then consider you may have a spun rod bearing. I'm not Chicken Little, but I do know what engine knock has meant for me. Good luck!
