I agree with 84na944, check the ignition switch. They are cheap, buy a new one and replace it.

Did you check and make sure the rotor and or carrier for it are still ok, and not spun on camshaft? Possible.

I really have no ideas about your car, but I don't like to hear about people getting taken advatage of. Is all your diaganostic information from Phils garage? If they haven't fixed it, did they still charge you? It really upsets me when a garage charges me a fee for their education. I would go talk to them and get your money back.

There was a case not too long ago of a loose board connection inside the DME, it's worth inspecting.

Actually DME issues are surprisingly regular. I'm guessing 80s electronics + 20 years of driving. Things work loose over time. Again, the sudden onset of problems suggest that could be it.
Keep at it though, you'll get it...

Do something really simple for me just to be sure, and don't say no because if it makes your car start you'll be pissed if you wait two more weeks before you are exhausted enough to try it.

Go out and pop the hood, take a very long socket extension and a hammer and use it to tap on the top of the two round/oval sensors on the top of the bellhousing behind the engine. You don't have to beat them, but give them a few good whacks, and if it doesn't start, do it again for good measure.

Don't say "I took them out and did this and that" .......that means nothing. I want you to tap them to release the magnets inside. Without the jolt they won't release even if you shake them. I spent almost $2000 before a Porsche tech came along and whacked them to shake the magnets down inside them and the damn thing started right up.

you could try this, Nine-44 did this once when my early yellow car randomly died. It was weird, it started 2 minutes earlier, i went inside to get something, and when i came back to start it again it would crank but not start. I tried all kinds of stuff, nothing worked.

Finally he took the cover off the DME relay, held the contacts open, and I tried starting it and it worked. I never did figure out what the problem was, but it hasnt come up again so yay!

I hear you on cleaning them, but there is a known problem with the magnets sticking and not dropping back down to read the flywheel. A little tapping usually set's them straight. No dice?

The way things are going I think you'll change your screen name soon
