Maintenance this, problems that....blah blah blah.

Every car has problems. So the 928 has more expensive parts, which contributes to high maintenance prices. Tip of the day: GET A PPI ON A 928. That way you don't run into the sh*t the previous owner did and the $$$ the car whored him out of to fix it.

My worst repair bill was $2,000 which included a rebuilt torque tube dropped in, transmission service, AND a steering rack.

That'd be a hell of a buy. Rust free examples in nice shape are not a dime a dozen anymore, especially for two grand. If you don't buy it, i'd be willing to bet there are other people on Rennlist who would ****** it up in a second. If it were summer right now, I sure would.

Post some pics if/when you have some.

I passed on a $2500 '74 914 a couple months ago. Fun as hell to drive, but (as I said before) it would have made me miserable in about 100 different ways as I just don't have the desire to be a Porsche mechanic/bodyman every weekend. Nor did I want to sign my 401k over to my local 914 experts.

The 2.0's are best of breed, but still a lot of commitment. If it's been converted to carbs you should be suspicious. They had a lot of fuel delivery issues...the injection system was the least of their problems. Look on www.autoatlanta.com for more 914 stuff...they are experts.

944 NA haters are full of it. They're fun cars, and who cares what beats it on the track? I've driven mine every day since June without a hiccup, and I'm not the only one on here who's done it. There are nice cars for cheap out there, and you already know most of the 944 song & dance.

That 928S for $6k sounds like a nice car if the PPI was okay. Caveat emptor, of course, but that can be said about anything. Maintenance might get you from time to time, but that's just the cost of driving a car like a 928.

Obviously ultimate reliability is not your biggest concern....otherwise you'd be driving a 2005 Honda Civic Value edition for $159/month!

I'd second that - as long as it hasn't been bondoed or something. Still not a daily car...a rust-free one deserves a full restoration.

Buy them both and flip the 914 next spring for a nice profit. You will make money on a rust-free 914.

Yeah, its fun having a 944 as a daily. I have driven mine every day for almost a year. And teh 951 I had before that was a daily. So, I've done that dance, just want another song to add to the playlist ;-)

You people (excluding Mongo) have no idea what the hell you are talking about when it comes to 928s. So if you can realize this, stop spreading second or third hand knowledge.

pcarfan944 - where the hell do you get 2000 dollars a year? Including the gas and oil and tires?

My 2001 Acura MDX has been about 4k a year in its first year. So with your logic the 928 is cheap.

What about a 924S?

I know I'm not the only one that thinks they're cool. Love those skinny hips

What the hell is so stupid about saying:

1. "Hopefully someone experienced will chime in about maintenance. I've heard it's bad, but I've heard that about every Porsche. I'm sure the old rule about keeping up on the routine stuff would apply."

2. "The 928S with a clean PPI sounds like a nice car for $6k."

Do you have some explosive knowledge that a potential buyer should know about?

Is there some sort of electronic function that automatically charges your Visa every time you start the car?

Do they run on ground up moonrocks and Faberge' eggs?

I joined this forum to learn. You're clearly experienced (the engine in the pic is gorgeous), so why not share your knowledge a little bit?

If youre so against a Honda/etc (Beats me why but ok) look at a Volvo. The parts guy that I get my parts from just bought one, for $1200CDN. Enough trunk space for at least two dead bodies, four seats, legendary reliability and toughness. IIRC, the last one he bought as a winter car, he made money selling it. Then the guy who bought it sold it, and made money on it.

914s rust. Fast.

And Hondas/Toyotas/Nissans are great beater cars. A friend had an old Tercel for a while. Got it for $250 or something. It ran on the stink of a gas pump, and was the toughest little car ive ever seen, with over 200k hard miles on the clock. His Celica was the same thing.

Hey if you don't want to go Nippon for your beater. Go Americana. I bought a Saturn as a beater....and believe me I do on a daily basis!! No guts but gets me around when I am playing with the 51.

Um, if you read the 928 forum (and others)the general consensus is that $2,000/year is solid estimate for maintenance and repairs. It's been posted many times. But oh wait; they must be spreading second or third hand knowledge !

My dad has had two Nissans. One was a hardbody truck, happily carried loads of dirt and whatever else, many many times over its life. Only thing that broke was the overdrive button, in 10 years. It was totalled in a wreck. He now has a Sentra. Only thing thats broken on it is the in tank fuel pump, because he constantly had it running on fumes waiting for cheap gas. Thats over the course of 2 or 3 years now.

Ill take a Nissan just as much as a Toyota!!

Id list the stupid problems with the family Dodge... But those are more or less a given It does keep on going though... Amazingly.
