Default Ideas for removing strut insert cap?? See Pics

Well i'm in the process of replacing my front struts and putting in koni adjustables, but i've hit a little snag. I have early struts which allow you to unscrew the top and put the koni inserts in. However, I can't seem to get the damn cap off!! I've tried penetrating oil, heating it up, and then pounding the hell out of it with a hammer on a flat screwdriver in the grooves (as you can see in the pics). Any ideas guys? Thanks,

-Steve

i'm a honda motorcycle mechanic and we use spanner wrenches alot at work. if there's a honda dealer in your town you might stop by and let a tech look at it. from the look of it though i would clamp the cap in a vise with a pipe jaw and rig up something to turn the strut body instead of trying to turn the cap.

I ran into the same problem, and eventually gave up replacing, or lets say, put off. I know that Porsche has a special tool for this job, as they so conveniently have for most jobs on our cars. I wish I could help, but am waiting for the answer along with you.

Put the strut in a large vise and use a large pipe wrench or channel locks with about a 3' pipe on the handle.

Make sure the vise is firmly attached to the bench, I've broken them off....

Heat IS a wonderful thing;

But it must be an actylene torch, and you'd have them right off. Propane won't do it.

The pipe wrench thing is a good bet too. That's what I use.
